Nightmarch received some hoots after, his victory yesterday, and a section of the Sunday Press is asking why the stewards have not ordered an inquiry into the horse’s running at Moorcfiefd, compqped with his form at Rosehill. v ' notls7 (By “Binocular.”) It is stated that J. Fryer will bo represented at tho; Auckland, Feilding and Wairarapa Easter meetings. Among those under his caro who are engaged at Ellcrslie are Bright Glow and Green Linnet. The Melbourne sportsman, Mr H. Spry, on Saturday comploctd negotiations for the purchase of the Australian Sun gelding St. Melba from his owner-trainer, B. Burgess, of Masterton. St. Melba will bo shipped to Melbourne, via Sydney, on Friday. Gran Chaco bolted' with T. Webster in the preliminary of tho Cave Handicap at Masterton on Saturday, and after doing a \round threw his rider and then collidod with F. Reid, head lad for J. Sullivan at Woodvillc, who was entering tho course by 'way of tho straight. Webster was not hurt, though ho was replaced in the saddle by W. Broughton, and did not ride during, tho day. P.oid, however, was not so fortunate, sustaining a broken shoulder, and was taken to hospital. Recalling somo amusing experiences in the South Island, a correspondent in a Nelson paper mentions that on ono occasion, when a rank outsider headed the favourite at the turn into tho straight, the crowd upset tho judgo’s box ' and tho races had to be declarod off, as tho jtidgo could not sco the finish. At a meeting in Southland tho soven horses in a certain race appeared on tho card as belonging to seveno different owners, but they were all the property of ono man—and he was a disqualified - person at that. At a Canterbury centro on one occasion tho judge declined to act in a raco in which ho liad a horse starting. The honorary starter was in the same position, and ho also. declined to act. Substitutes were appointed, and tho raco was run. The horses ownefl hy the judge and the honorary starter got .away with a good lead, and finished well clear of tho rest of the field. The substitute declared it a dead-heat, and it was generally conceded by the -course habitues that ho had dono the correct and graceful thing. /

It is evidently intended to give Pompeius a further opportunity to earn fame as a jumper, for tho son of Lucullus has been entered for tho St. Helier’s Hurdle Race to be decided at Ellorslie this month. During the present Season Pompeius has won several races on tho -flat, including a Win in tho Rotorua Cup, and as a result he is now in first-class condition to fulfil his engagement in tho approaching jumping season. Pompeius has few superiors as far as jumping is concerned, and it. would not surprise to see him taking high honours in this department within the next few months.—-Auckland Star.

Although the New Zealand sire, imported Night Raid, was represented by only four winners for tho current season up to March 8, they won 19 races, worth £37,497, and placed him at the head of the winning sires’ list for that period (says the Sydney Morning Herald). His chief winners wero Ph*r Lap and Nightmarch. Imported Magpie is maintaining his record, and, according to tho records compiled for the Australasian Turf Register, he was second with 33 winners of 55 races, worth £27,528 10s. Tho Queensland sire Highfiold is next with 18 winners of 31 races for an aggregate of £20,413 10s. Other sires whose progeny have won more than £IO,OOO in stakes this season are:—Rossendale, 27, winners, 45i races, earnings £18.328 10s; St. Anton, 37, 665, £14,143 10s; Scrcmond, 26, 42, £19,120; and Grccnstead, 16, Very many years have gone by since tho Randwick trainer W. Kelso has experienced such a quiot timo as this season, and probably he does not anticipate any remarkable alteration during tho next couple of months, says a Sydnoy paper. Although Kelso has not turned out a winner for some time, he is well up in tho trainers’ list so far as earnings aro concerned, for Loquacious credited him with tho Metropolitan. With Loquacious Kelso is in something like the same position as J. Barden with Greonline. Loquacious is not retarded as up to weight-for-age standard, and in the distance handicaps she has heavy imposts. She has 9st 61b, 81b above weight-for-age for a four-year-old mare, in the Sydnoy Cup; and, although it is a big task, sho will be given an opportunity to overcome -the burden. She will bo ridden by M. McCarten, whose Doncaster Handicap mount will most likely be either Gesto or Panola. TROTTING. MARLBOROUGH MEETING. CUP WON BY VIKOTA. Per Press Association.
