JOINERS’ AWARD.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 1. A Dominion award (excepting Marlborough) was issued by tho Arbitration Court to-day in respect of tire car:j: penters’ and joiners' dispute, heard £: on March 18 and 19. An increase of jd an liour is granted to joiners to i make their rate tlie same as for carpenters, but such a decision is not to £ bo regarded as constituting a precedent. Tho matters referred to the Court wero hours, wages, holidays, suburban work, country work. In all matters excepting wages tho award varies little from the old award. A memor- £ andum to the award states: £ “The principal departure from the :j: expired award is tho increase of |d per hour to joiners, which brings their rate up to that fixed for carpenters. :£j Until the coming into operation of £ tho award of 1924, carpenters and £ joiners were paid the same rates. In £ 1924 carpenters were granted an ad- £ ditional Jd per hour, partly on account jj of broken time through bad weather, : ; i and partly on account of expenditure on tools. A majority of the Court 3 has decided, in view of the fact that a £[ joiner has to maintain an expensive kit £| of tools, to restore the position that 3 existed before the award of 1924 came £j into operation, and lias awarded him •:| the extra Jd an hour. This ia not £l intended as a precedent or a departure •:j from the Court’3 current rates as set : : out in the pronouncement of Scptember, 1925.”
