SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP.
CONTEST AT MELBOURNE. Tho world’s sprint championship will bo decided at Melbourne Motordrome on Saturday, April 6, and Saturday, April 12. Tho present holder of the title is Lynch Cooper, of Victoria. As the result of a conference between representatives of the Victorian Athletic League and Melbourne Carnivals, Limited, which was instrumental in reviving tho world’s professional sprint champion in 1928, tho conditions for tho championship this year have been materially altered. The contest will be over four distances, 75yds, 100yds, 130yds and 220yds. Points will be awarded as follow: —First, 9 points; second, 3 points; third, 1 point. Tho runner who secures the best aggregate will bo declared tho winner of tho championship, which is by invitation. Tho winner of each championship event will recoivo a spcical sash, while the outright winner will receive £IOO in cash and a sash and badge, with £3O for the runner-up, £ls for third, and £5 for fourth. Additional interest is being taken in the championship as D. McLennan, the Dominion champion, will be the official representative of New Zealand. Recently McLennan, who is aged 21 years, ran 100 yards in 9 4-ssec in a special record attempt. Cooper, Victoria, the world’s sprint champion, considers McLennan one of the greatest runners ho has competed against.
