TENNIS. (From Our Own Correspondent). RANGIOTU. April 1. Tho Rangiotu tennis team journeyed to Whakarongo last Saturday when they defeated the latter club by 9 sets and 76 gamos t 0.7 sets and 60 games. The weather was ideal and a pleasant day’s outing was thoroughly enjoyed. The following are the detailed-results, Rangiotut,players being mentioned first: Men’s singles.—L. J. Walker 6 beat P. Vautier 1; W. Larkins 6 beat L. Clark 0; M. Saywell 6 beat C. Mills 2; D. Walker 6, beat L. Jackson 5. Men’s doubles.—Larkina and Walker 2 lost to Yautier and Clark 6; Saywell and D. Walker 6 beat Mills and Jackson 0, Ladies’ singles.—Mrs Walker 6 beat Miss G. Vautier 3; Mis 3 Dixon 4 lost to Mrs Eggers 6; Mrs S. Pearce 5 lost to Miss Vautier 6; Miss Bond 3 lost to Miss Wood 6. Ladies’ doubles. —Mrs Walker and Miss Dixon 1 lost to Mrs Eggers and Miss Vautier 6; Mrs Pearce and Miss Bond 6 beat Misses W r ood and Vautier 2. Mixed doubles. —Walker arnd Mrs Walker 6 beat Vautier and Mrs Eggers 3; Larkins and Miss Dixon 2 lost to Clark and Miss G. Vautier 6; Saywell and Mrs Pearce 5 lost to Mills and Miss Vautier 6; D. Mr Saywell, on behalf of the Rangiotu Club, thanked the Whakarongo Club for the excellent afternoon’s sport and stated that the courts were tho best they had played on yet. It is expected that a return match will be played at a near future date. ASSISTANT TEACHER FAREWELLED Last Friday afternoon the pupils of the local school assembled in the hall to bid farewoll to Miss J. Henry who for the last two years has been the popular assistant mistress. There was also a representative gathering of parents and friends. As a mark of their appreciation and the high esteem In which she is held the children arranged a bright and enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental items and the efforts of the children to entertain were thoroughly enjoyed. After the children’s entertainment the headmaster, Mr L. J. Walker, referred to the loss the school was suffering in the departure of Miss Henry, who had always performed her work in a thoroughly conscientious manner and had endeared herself to all the pupils of tho school, especially to those who were under her special charge. He wished the departing teacher every success in Raurimu. Mr Walker then made the school’s presentation, which comprised a handsome crystal salad bowl and servers. Miss Henry, in reply, most feelingly thanked the children for their handsome gifts and assured them that wherever she went she would ever remember her Rangiotu pupils and friends. Before dispersing a most ■ enjoyable afternoon tea was served to all present by the senior girls. FOOTBALL. FOXTON (18) v. HUIA (3). With the football season now fast approaching the Huia junior team journeyed to Foxton la6t Saturday to play a friendly game with the Foxton juniors. Both sides naturally lacked form and combination. However, the game served to remind the players that a lot of solid work and training will be necessary before the competition games commence. Arrangements are being made for the annual match against the Hui Mai Club next Saturday week, 12th inst, to be played at Sanson. MOTOR SMASH. A motor smash . and a narrow escape from serious injuries and probably a fatality were experienced by Mr W. Nairne and a party of three others last Friday. The mishap occurred in the vicinity of Levin. When endeavouring to avert a head-on collision with a cow the steering wheel was evidently turned hard over, causing the front wheels to lock and the car turned a complete somersault. All escaped practically unhurt with the exception of Mr J. Crowe who received a few cuts and scratches on the left arm and several bruised ribs. The damage to the car, which is a new one, is estimated to be in the vicinity of £7O. PERSONAL. Mr and Mm Akers and family are spending their holidays in the Milford Bounds and will later visit Christchurch and Dunedin. Mr W. Renton, who sustained a fractured leg in an accident last year, has returned to hospital for medical treatment. The many friends of De? tective P. Alsop, an old boy of Rangiotu, will be pleased to learn that he has been promoted and has received orders to proceed to Samoa on special duty.
