FEDERAL GOVERNOR
LOCAL APPOINTMENT? RUMOURS CURRENT tN AUSTRALIA.. SIR ADRIAN KNOX MENTIONED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 25 11.50 a.m. SYDNEY, March 25. . Rumours are current that Sir Adrian Knox, Chief Justice of the High Court, will possibly be the next Governor-General of Australia. Other names mentioned are Generals Cliauval and Monash; also, Mr Charlton, formerly leader of the Federal Labour Party, and Mr Groomc, late Speaker of the House of Representatives. Labour members are pressing for the appointment of an Australian, and Sir Adrian Knox’s acceptance, involving as it would his resignation from the Bench, would be particularly pleasing to a section of the Labour Party. Official circles at Canberra maintain the strictest secrecy. A message from London states that the Dominions Office regards the rumour as ridiculous. No name has been yet submitted to the King, and it is not likely that a name will be submitted for some time. Mr Fenton, Federal Minister of Customs, who is at present in London, is of the opinion that the time is not ripe for a local appointment, which would be sure to cause heart burnings.
