SPEEDING MOTORISTS.

DAMAGE TO ROADS. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, March 22. The recent defence by the Auckland Automobile Association of motorists charged with travelling at 40 miles an hour and over on roads in the Piako County was mentioned at a meeting of the Waitemata County Council by the engineer, Mr A. Murray. He said that it was proved that the speeds had not been dangerous to the pubhc, but the Piako County Council heiu that the damage done to the roads as a result of speeding should be considered. The council supported this opinion and decided to communicate with the Automobile Association, the Piako County Council and the Main Highways Board. Mr Murray said that in previous years the county ratepayers had provided loan moneys for metalling roads that had recently been declared main highways and this investment was rapidly being destroyed by the motorists. Although not travelling at a speed dangerous to the publio motorists were, as a result of their undue haste, damaging lightly-metalled roads.
