PROTECTION OF TREES.

OBVIATING DANGER. BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S ACTION. “That this meeting of members of the Manawatu Beautifying Society and residents of Palmerston North pledges itself to support the action of the .Borough Council in retaining the trees planted in the streets throughout the borough, and desires to assure the council that the Beautifying Society is ready and willing to confer with it and consider ways and means of obviating any danger that certain of the trees present in their present unguarded state.”

This was a resolution passed at a mfeeting of tho Alanawatu Beaufying Society, when Mr Wollerman asked what action was being taken in connection with the prevention of the cutting of trees m the borough streets following the decision in the recent court case. He urged that the society should take up the matter of their protection from the axe.

The chairman (Mr N. H. Mackie) intimated that when the matter of making provision for the menace to motorists from trees was taken up by the Borough Council it was held in abeyance pending the need for further consideration if the circumstances warranted that action. It was now common knowledge that a test case had been decided against the Borough Council and the question would be revived. When the matter of removing the trees had been brought up before, a number of citizens who were now members of the society had undertaken that, should the necessity for assistance arise, they would support any scheme to save the trees. The chairman thought that all should be as good as their word. The time had arrived when something would have to be done, and he moved the resolution which was carried in the form stated.
