SANDON SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL MEETING. RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED. Inaugurated eight years ago, the annual meeting or the tsandon Sports Club has grown rapidly ui popularity, and evidence of the outstanding position it has assumed among country fixtures was forthcoming on Saturday, when an attendance of over 500 gathered to watch an interesting and varied programme. The weatner was gloriously tine, and the tracks tor both cycling and flat events were'fast. A feature of the meeting was the exceptionally, large number of entries received, the aggregate eclipsing previous records. Particularly was this so in the children’s section, wherein the McKelvie and Hornblow Shield competitions attracted keen competition from practically every school in the surrounding district. Another feature was the strong support accorded the piping and dancing events. The Hornblow Shield was retained by Kopano School with 37 points. Rangiotu School was second with 33 points, Glen Oroua third with 31, and Ohakea fourth with 21. The McKelvie Shield, which Foxton has held for three years, was secured by Levin, with 361 points. Foxton and Marton were equal in second place with 28 points and Rangiotu fourth with 20 points. The trophies won by the school children were presented during the afternoon. The club president, Mr W. S. Penny, introduced Messrs J. Linklater, M.P., W. A. Collins, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, and J. K. Hornblow, donor of one of the shields. He also expressed regret at the unavoidable absence of tho patron, Mr J. F. McKelvie. In presenting the McKelvie Shield, Mr Linklater congratulated the Levin School on its success and on the outstanding exhibition given, referring also to the fine sporting spirit of the Foxton competitors who had held the shield for three years. Mr Hornblow said that the meeting was one of the finest for school children in the North Island, perhaps in the Dominion. Special mention was made by Mr Hornblow of the performance of V. Botoroff, of the Foxton School, who was presented with a silver teapot for the champion girl runner. The girl, who was a member of a Russian family which had sought refuge in New Zealand after the Great War, had shown a fine sporting spirit and the win was a popular one. ‘ Mr Collins spoke of the admirable way in which the meeting had been organised and conducted. He had not anticipated that the fixture would be so large, and he was pleasurably surprised at the number of children competing. . ... During the afternoon an exhibition of eurhythmies was given by pupils of the Foxton High School. Tho officials were as follow: Judges: Running and cycling, Messrs J. H. Perrett, J. B. Bradley, W. E.
