THE RUGBY SEASON

ATHLETIC CLUB. With expectations of brighter things in tne future, the Athletic Rugby Club set the ball rolling for the 1930 season last evening wheii the annual meeting of the club was held, Mr W. Carruthers presiding over a good attendance. In commenting upon the annual report (previously published in the “Standard”) the chairman stated that Mr McHerron. who was out of town, had done good service in the past in the role of coach and delegate to the Rugby Council and had mentioned to the speaker that he would be again prepared to act in the 6a me capacity during the coming term. The season had been a comparatively good one and it had been particularly gratifying to find that the finances were sound and as a result the club would enter tne incoming season on a sound financial footing. On the motion of Mr Hutchins, seconded by Mr R. Ormond, the report and balance sheet was adopted, the mover taking the opportunity to congratulate the secretary on the manner in which he had carried out has duties. The chairman added that Mr Stone had proved himself to bo the best secretary the club had ever had.

QUESTION OF AMALGAMATION. Prior to the business of the evening being entered upon the chairman explained that he had hoped to see representatives from the West End Club present, it having been mooted that that club combine with the Athletic Club this year, which would prove of distinct benefit to the one body. Unfortunately the younger club had not as yet held its annual meeting and tho question of -amalgamation could not be proceeded with meantinK, for should such be brought into effect the incomers would naturally be entitled to have a voice in the management of the club. A deputation from the committee of tlie Athletic Club had waited on the West End Club at the end of last season and the prospects for the amalgamation had then appeared bright. In view of the position Mr Hughey moved, and was seconded by Mr It. Ormond; that the election of officers be held in abeyance until such time as the intentions of the West End Club had been determined. When put to the meeting, the motion was carried, a further suggestion that another meeting be held next Thursday, by which time the West End Club might have met, being also acted upon. It was considered advisable, in view of tho close approach of the annual meeting of the ltugby Council, that the club’s delegates be appointed and Messrs. T. McHerron, W. Carruthers and H. A. Stone were chosen. FORTHCOMING GAMES. The Otaki Club wrote making overtures for a match at Otaki on 22nd inst. Mr Cope considered that, while the date was somewhat early, the game would servo as a pipe-opener for the players. It was accordingly decided to accept the fixture pro tem. The Kaponga (Taranaki) Club forwarded a circular in connection with a tournament to be held on AprilW. As the entries do not close till April 12, a decision was held over meantime. GENERAL. Messrs. A. Wilson, J. Burchall and G. Wilson were elected new members. It was decided to make application to the Rugby Council for Thursday evenings for practices in the gymnasium.
