THE HOLIDAY SEASON.
(To the Editor). Sir, —Now that the festive season with all its attendant recreation is almost ended, we can afford to call a halt and enquire as to whether we derive as much pleasure from the Sportsground, the Esplanade, or Ashhurst, as we would from the sea beach. Personally, I am in agreement with the old lady, a grandmother by the way, - who expressed herself thus at the Esplanade recenty when several young people were complaining, at the locality, and all its environment qr surroundings, declaring it deadly monotonous and gloomy, etc. Tho oiu lady remarked: “The best way to obtain enjoyment, at any gathering, is to in a measure create your own particular form of pleasure, not wait for anyone else to attend to you. Then it will make no difference whether it is the sea beach or the inland district that you decide to visit.” We all must recognise that the conditions have changed greatly during the last few years, in the direction of more holidays, than formerly. Also, with the more modem means of transport, such as motor-care, the rising generation can easily obtain a change of scenery, with all it represents, than their predecessors were able to get. In anv case, we are not, nor do we desire to be, like the great industrial cities of older lands, where only a verv remote excursion train is the only change to be expected to vary the monotony of the surroundings, as we are fairly well catered for in all State Schools as well as other institutions when the holiday season is due. —I am, etc., H. J. CANTON. Palmerston North, March 7, 1930.
