FEILDING
OBSTETRICAL CAMPAIGN. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, March 7. There was an excellent attendance of ladies at tho Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoon to hear the address given by Dr. Doris Gordon, of Stratford, .on tho obstetrical endowment movement. Tho Mayoress (Mrs C. E. Taylor) presided and extended a welcome to Dr. Gordon, while Dr. Phillips welcomed the visitor on behalf of the local medical profession. Dr. Gordon gave a brief outline of the campaign she is conducting and pf which she has utmost confidence in its success. Both in the North and South Island great interest was being taken in the movement and the fund was growing rapidly, Auckland’s quota of £*ooU being already assured. The speaker went ou to explain the details of the appeal and impressed on her audience tho great benefits that would accrue from the establishment of a chair of obstetrics in New Zealand. Dr. Cameron, of Feilding eulogised Dr. Gordon and her great interest in the much needed institution. He moved: “That it be a recommendation to the New Zealand Obstetrical Society that the new Maternity Hospital which has been promised by the Government should be called the Riley Hospital in recognition of the seivices rendered by Dr. lliley during his professorship to the medical and nursing professions and to tho women of New Zealand.” Dr. Phillips seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. On the motion of Dr. Salmond and Mrs Cameron, the meeting passed a hearty vote of thanks to Dr. Doris Gordon for her able address. Mrs McCorkindale explained the activities of the women’s branch of the Farmers’ Union in regard to providing nurses for families in the back country. ~ , . INTAKE REPAIRS COMPLETED. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, March 8. The repairs which have been carried out to the weir at the municipal waterworks were completed yesterday and tho borough engineer, Mr T. K. Hay, reports that the erosive action of tho river has been arrested. Ihe stone filled gabions are now about a further 15 feet downstream from the base of the concrete apron on to which the water falls from the jveir. If the deep hole which was formed by the falling water remains where it is on the downstream side of tho weir, Mr Hay states that this will make the repair work all the more permanent as tne water in the hole will form a “cushion” for the falling stream to hit against and so prevent further erosion. The cost of the repairs has amounted to about £4OO, or approximately £SO above the estimated price. The work was done by tho borough staff under the direction of Mr Hay. NOTES. The members of the Feilding Anglers’ Club will hold a competition with the Pnhiatna Anglers’ Club over the weekend. The fishing will be done in tho Manawatu River on the far side of the Mr J. J. Bryce, of Knvitea, who recently received what was thought would be a serious injury to his eye, is stated to have almost recovered, the piece of steol which entered his eye not being likely >to cause him any trouble. Mr A. A. Williamson, of Feilding, is reported to be making a satisfactory recovery from the recent severe operation he underwent.
