AUSTRALIA’S DIFFICULTIES.
EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES. CONFERENCE CONTEMPLATED. Received February 25. 10 a.m. SYDNEY. Feb. 24. The holding of a conference of employers and employees to discuss the economic crisis is contemplated by the New South Wales Government. The Premier, Mr T. R. Bavin, after a Cabinet meeting to-day, 6aid: “We were unfortunately unable to arrive at a common policy at the Premier’s Conference last week, and my Government is faced with the necessity of dealing with the situation separately. We shall probably’ call a conference of trade union representatives and employers’ organisations with the purpose of enlisting co-operation.” INCREASED PETROL TAX LIKELY CANBERRA, Feb. 24. It is believed that the Prime Minister, Mr J. H. Scullin, will recommend Cabinet to consider favourably the States’ request for an extra tax of 2sd a gallon on petrol in addition to the present amount of 4d.
