CARTING OF SPOIL.
LOCAL BODIES’ DISPUTE. A matter of interest to ratepayers in tho northern end of the Horowheuua County is tho dispute between the Horowhenua County Council and the Makerua Drainage Board over the cost of work done by the council for the latter body. After protracted negotiations it was finally decided that the point should be submitted to an independent arbitrator and representatives of the two bodies met before Mr R. L. Harding yesterday. Cr. Monk represented thb council and Mr H. J. T. Hume the board.
The dispute arose over the carting of material for the ramps of the Kara Bridge on the main road at Shannon. The council’s original charge was 9s 4sd per yard, but this was later reduced to 9s, which amount it had actually cost the council. The board did not question the council’s figures, but considered that the work had not been done as economically as it might and should have been and that the charges were excessive. They first made an offer of 3s, later increasing it *°After hearing lengthy argument Mr Harding reserved his decision.
