RACING NEWS.

RACING IN THE NORTH. AT MATAMATA AND ROTORUA. PALMERSTONIAN'S IMPRESSIONS. With the rush of the more regular holiday season over. Rotorua and its environs at this period of the year oiler a distinct attraction, and a stay in that resort during February has the additional attraction to the racing enthusiast of offering three days’ racing. A Palmcrstonian, who recently returned from the north, attended both the Matamata and Rotorua iixtures, coming away with very pleasant recollections of his stay. In' conversation with “Binocular” following his return, the southerner described the former fixture as unique in several respects, the presence of a natural terrace having obviated the erection of grandstands meantime. Fortunately the weather proved fine and the large crowd of holiday makers viewed proceedings from various points of vantage in comfort, the scene being a highly animated one and giving to the fixture a picnic-like air wherein good fellowship prevailed. Meantime the totalisator house, the main booth and secretary’s office arc the only permanent structures and the visitor could not but wonder what would cventuato in the event of the climatic conditions being other than favourable. “It is the hone of the committer?,” explained the Palmcrstonian, “that in the near future they will bo granted an extra permit which will enable them to race on consecutive days. At the past fixture they had tried the experiment of restricting the events to hacks only, but while the nominations and acceptances had been excellent, the absence of the open class horses of better known calibre had appeared to restrict the betting activities of patrons, for while there was an excellent attendance of enthusiasts. the totalisator returns suffered slightly. It was nevertheless remarkable to find that the volume of money handled by the totalisator staff during the course of the day amounted to no less than £18,249 —a figure which would be acceptable to some of tho southern clubs who arc, to outward appearanco at least, more firmly established and more up-to-date in their appointments. Despite the fact that the totalisator house was of only fair dimensions the expert totalisator staff handled the crowd expeditiously and well, and their work was one of the features of the meeting. Operated by Messrs Blomfield, of Auckland, the proprietors of the totalisator machine had made due provision for tho handling of a large crowd by the securing of an ample and expert staff. The latter were under the direct supervision of Mr W. Adams —a past master at tho business —with Mr 11. Shcrwin fulfilling the duties of “first lieutenant,” and under their direction the dividends, as in previous years, were posted with a celerity which gained for the staff approbation from all sides. Despite the difficulties under which he was required to work, the secretary, Mr T. J. Underwood, had maintained a high standard of efficiency likewise.

“While in large degree a natural racecourse, the course proper at Matamata ha# been improved by the hand of man until the club possesses an ideal property and the standard of racing was excellent throughout. Tho performance of King's Guard in annexing the Hack Cup was an excellent one, the Quin Abbey gelding having, by reason ot the consistency he had displayed at the Auckland fixture, been fully anticipated. The performance of Unoeo when fie had won the Tirau llighweight Handicap under 11.0 had also been an excellent one, the aged Some Boy II gelding having scored with ease. Later in the day the same animal had again figured when he finished second to the Tea Tray gelding Grand Tea to whom he was conceding 191bs. Of interest to southerners had been the presence in the Putaruru Stakes of Leasehold, an attractive-looking two-year-old who raced in the interests of Mrs W. Thorpe, wife of the former Awapuni studmaster, Mr W. Thorpe, who now has his two sires, Acre and Gasbag, quartered in the Waikato. It had been stated that the youngster had had but little work, but there was every indication that he would be heard of later on.

Catering as it does (or a holiday crowd, the ltotorua Club makes every endeavour to extend hospitality to the visitor from afield and the hand of good fellowship is ever readily extended by the president, Dr. H. Bertram, and the secretary, Mr E. La Trobe Hill. Unfortunately for the club, the weather for the opening day did not prove at all auspicious, ram setting in on the Thursday night and continuing without abating till Sunday night. The opening, which had been set down for the Saturday, had to be compulsorily postponed till the Monday, and the attendance of the public naturally suffered, although the officials had every reason to congratulate themselves on the outcome, for the racing had proved to be of quite a high order. Despite the copious rain, the course had made a good recovery and the southerner was struck with the beauty of the surroundings. While the course is possibly a shade on the small side, the appointments are excellent, the club possessing particularly fine grandstand and stewards' stand accommodation. The two fixtures, which had attended one another within a space of a week’s interval, had furnished quito a contrast in methods of racing, the Matamata Club following the practice of southern clubs in racing lefthanded whereas the Rotorua Club race right-handed as at Ellerslie. As at Matamata, the totalisator operations had been controlled by Mr Adams on behalf of Messrs Blomfield, of Auckland, to the complete satisfaction of club officials and patrons. The race card published by the Rotorua Club was commented upon by the Palmerstonian, it being somewhat strange by reason of its size when compared with those of this and many other districts. Whereas the visitor had been more accustomed to a book of the dimensions of five inches by four inches, the Rotorua book was of the usual width, but was seven inches in depth whicji assisted towards a complete review of the field at a glance. For the benefit of the possessor, the books had portions along the outer edge perforated and numbered which, on the race being run, could be extracted and permitted of any particular event being turned up without undue hunting through the pages. The scheme was considered to ne one worthy of emulation by soutliern clubs where the fields were large.

lIANNEVIRKE RACES. THE CARD FOR TO-MORROW. CANDIDATES REVIEWED. (By “Binocular.”) The Dannevirke Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which opens to-morrow, has attracted quite free response from owners and two days’ capital sport is promised racing enthusiasts. The Hawke’s Bay course is reported to be in great order at present and the stage appears to be fittingly set for a highly successful meeting. For the convenience of intending patrons from this end of the district special train arrangements have been made which will permit of their arriving in good time for the opening event which has been set down for 11.45 o’clock. The card to be presented is as under: HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 100

Mothplane, who heads the weights in the High weight Handicap, also claims an engagement in the final ovent, and in view of the fact that she is by no means a big typo, the Warplane filly may prefer the 8.9 imposed in the mile race. Woodvillo form promises to prove a useful guide and Tunbridge and Pale Star read well on that account. Call Again and Joke Form have both displayed a good turn of speed on the flat, but probably backers will prefer the other pair.

MAIDEN PLATE, of 80 sovs. Five

Once again finds a certain amount of unknown talent figuring in the Maiden Plato, but Lucretia, Black Acre, Acreline, Ho Whanga, Lady Lackham, Pari and Corneroff have all shown somo promise in their outings to date and tho favourite might come from Black Acre, Acreline and Lucretia.

The Hawk, topweight in tho cup field, had to forego his W oodvillo engagements as the result of his meeting with a slight mishap. However, should the old fellow be again himself and have a dry track on tho day, he will not lack for friends. Blimp, on tho other hand, would come in for increased popularity in the event of the sting being out of the ground. Then there are the Swell, Marjoram, Stanchion, Mountain Heath and Billion, all of whom are likely to enter into the discussions. Track conditions will largely dcterriiino tho prosjieets of The Hawk, but The Swell, Billion and Mountain Heath will no doubt havo friends. TAHORAITE HACK HANDICAP of 100

The hack sprint event has attracted a baker’s dozen and, with 8.1, Belle Star appears to have an excellent prospect of further adding to the stako winnings secured by the Taranaki mentor, R. Johnson, since purchasing the Lucullus filly. Quinola showed a good turn of speed at Foxton and the Quin Abbey filly might well have improved further in the interim, but a repetition of his first dny form at Pahiatua would make Golden Shadow difficult to dispose of. Cloyne and Miss Quex have shown improvement of late, but the favourite will probably come from Belle Star, Golden Shadow and Quinola.

Tripping appears to be ceitain to be the favourite for the Nursery Handicap, despite the fact that her Woodville success entailed a rise of 121bs in tho weights. Sporting Chance, Benign and Manuiri might be her strongest opponents. ORINGI HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs.

A strong field is carded for the Oringi Hack Handicap in which Royal Opera is lib in advance of Warfillc, who scored twice at Foxton. High Society is a bold galloper who should find the seven furlongs quite within his powers, while St. Melba and Lackham should likewise be at home over the journey. Although there are some likely sorts lower down, the favoured candidates promise to come from the upper division with Roynl Opera, High Society and Lackham sought after. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Six furlongs.

The second leg of Hie double finds but eight runners down to contest the event, but there is nevertheless the field for a good race. Kaihoro, who has a great turn of speed, has had a let-up, but she races well when fresh. Bonogne finished very strongly at Woodville, while Royal Parade, Dobbin and Veronese cannot be hurriedly dismissed. The day might find Kaihoro, Bonogne and Royal Parade figuring high in the betting market.

The handicapper does not appear to have taken any risks with Kilorell in the Makirikiri Hack Handicap, but the Kilbroney gelding should nevertheless run well over a mile despite the fact that he is required to give away weight. Mothplane ran a great race on the second day at Woodville, but she is now 13lbs worse off in a higher scale of weights. The disappointing Disrank has a great opportunity to prove himself, while of those lower down Watcrspcar, Birkbeck and Cook appear to hold distinct prospects. His Woodville form should bring Cook into favour with Mothplane and Kilorell also well supported.

DARGAVILLE MEETING. KING WILLONYX WINS AGAIN. Per Press Association. DARGAVILLE, Feb. 24. For the second day of the Dargaville Racing Club’s summer meeting there was glorious weather and the attendance was fair. The course was in splendid order. The totalisator handled £8446 10s during the day and £16,742 during the whole meeting, the latter being a decrease of £1732 10s on the figure for last year.
