SCENE AT WELLINGTON
CROWD RESIST POLICE. TWO MEN ARRESTED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. Having occasion to eject a man from a dance for fighting, on Saturday night, the police came into collision with a crowd at Te Aro. Batons were drawn and reinforcements were needed before they got jaossession of the two men they were arresting. In the Police Court to-day. a fireman named Hugh Tanner, alias Hugh James Tanner, aged 25. was charged with resisting Sergeant Edwards while in tho lawful execution of his duty. James O’Neill, a waterside worker, aged 32, was charged with assaulting Constable Ritchie while in the lawful execution of his duty, also with resisting Constable Ritchie. Counsel said that the men were pleading not guilty, and a remand was allowed until to-morrow. No statement was made by the police.
