VICTORY FOR LIBERALS.

ABSOLUTE MAJORITY,

UNEXPECTED LABOUR DEFEAT.

The complete returns tor 466 seats show the state of the parties to be: Minseito Party 273 Seiyukai Party 174 Labour Party 5 Others 14 The Minseito Party is Liberal and the Seiyukai Party Conservative. Labour’s defeat is remarkable. Osaka, the largest industrial centre, elected only one out of twelve candidates, Tokio two and Kyoto none. The former Minister and Speaker, Mr Motoda, who has been a member continuously since the Diet, was inaugurated in 1889, is among the few prominent men defeated.

Two prominent Labourites, Messrs Abe and Suzuki, have been surprisingly defeated. Unluckily for them they were pitted against very strong opponents. Mr Kagawa, a noted social worker, was unsuccessful.
