HIGHWAYS FINANCE.

SCHEME FOR AUSTRALIAN STATES. Received February 22, 2 p.m. CANBERRA, Feb. 22. The Premiers’ Conference decided to cancel, as from June next, the Federal grant in aid of roads in favour of a new arrangement under which the Commonwealth will distribute among the States the equivalent of two-pence halfpenny per gallon, derived from the petrol tax. Two millions sterling thus accruing to the States must be used for the construction and maintenance of roads. A suggestion that the petrol duties be increased was held over, the Federal representatives pointing out that there were certain difficulties in the way.
