A London cable message announces the death of Prince Max of Baden.
Sir Truby King left Auckland for Sydney by the Aorangi on Tuesday night. * Mr and Mrs A. M. Ongley left Palmerston North to-day on a holiday visit to Christchurch.
A cable message from London states that the Saint Andrew’s University has conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws on Major Evelyn French, the editor of the Spectator.
The friends of Mr H. B._ Tucker will be pleased to hear that his health of late has shown ah improvement. On fine afternoons Mr Tucker enjoys a drive by motor-car around the district. Mr J. H. Butcher, of Stratford, who was appointed to judge the special pig classes at the Spring Show, became suddenly indisposed and Mr J. Candy, of Palmerston North, acted in his stead.
Mr J. Turnbull, of the Public Trust Office, Palmerston North, has been appointed to a position on the Public Trustee’s staff at Samoa. He will leave for Samoa from Auckland on November 12.
Among the visitors to Palmerston North for the wedding of Miss Elspeth Mackenzie Forbes to Mr W. G. Mackenzie yesterday, was Mr Archibald Roderick Forbes, of Scotland, the uncle of the bride. During his stay in Palmerston North Mr Forbes is the 1 guest of Mr and Mrs N. Mackenzie Forbes, of Alan Street.
Mr H. S. Harrod, a member of the Borough Council’s oower house staff, is leaving Palmerston North to take up a responsible position with a refrigerator company. Yesterday, Mr Harrod was met by his fellow employees and Mr W. L. Cutten, chief engineer at the power house, made him a presentation on behalf of the staff.
During a visit to Palmerston North on Monday afternoon Mr E. A. James, a prominent member of the" Reform Party, became seriously ill through a heart attack while transacting some business at’ the Club Hotel. Medical assistance was obtained and Mr James had improved to such an extent yesterday that he was able to leave with Mrs James for his home in Wellington. Mr James spoke in high terms of praise of the attention he received from Miss Tucker, Sister Watt and members of the hotel staff during his illness. Rev. G. Gordon Bell, vicar of tfie Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Auckland. has been appointed vicar of Cambridge and Archdeacon of Waikato, Rev. Mr Bell went to the Auckland Dioceso from England nine years ago and he has had a faithful following at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He has been of great help to the Melanesian Mission Board ana has taken a prominent part in the Young Men’s Bible Class movement, not only in Auckland, but also ,at the annual camps in different parts of the Dominion. His new appointment takes effect early in the new year and so far a successor has not been appointed to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
