CHAMPIONS OF CHAMPIONS. WANGANUI AND MANAWATU. KAIERAU BEAT OLD BOYS. With climatic and ground conditions more closely. approaching summer than winter, it was anticipated that the delayed meeting of Kaierau (Wanganui) and Old Boys (Manawatu) to determine the inter-union championship, which carried with it the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup, would find players somewhat apathetic. However, while some of the participants showed a reluctance to collar low and thereby obviate the, danger of coming in contact with the hard ground, the game attained quite a high standard and kept the crowd of enthusiasts fully entertained. Old Boys opened in attractive manner and ran on 13 points in the first 20 minutes, but the tables were turned in the second half when the visitors, who have the reputation of being great finishers, took command to pile on 18 points and thus annex the cup, the holders being unable to add to their total. THE OPPOSING SIDES. Kaierau (red). —Simpson, Glenn, Scott. Bevan, Morgan, Bourke, Pongi, Parks, Tremewan, Ross, Stewart, Calcott. Brookie, Tyree, Lockett. Old Boys (blacks).—Williamson, Walker, Fletcher, Page, Riddell. Akuira, Pacey, Carrington, Varcoe, Greville, Galpin, Neild, Cater, Fox, Guy. Old Boys played with the light breeze at their backs in the opening spell and the fielding of a high return enabled Riddell to give his side the initial advantage, but a nice solo effort by Tremewan carried the visitors into the blacks’ territory. From a line-out deep in Old Boys’ territory Akuira received the ball, and when tackled sent on to Riddell, to Carrington to Fletcheb who handed on in turn to Cater, the forward giving the final pass to Page for the winger to score under the goal posts. Akuira goaled and within two minutes the Manawatu champions were five points up. Old Boys 5, Kaierau 0. A dash along the grandstand line by Scott brought the visitors into action, but Carrington replied in kind and a cross kick by Pacey saw Walker follow through hard only to be beaten by the bounce, Simpson stepping in to save. Play worked across the red goal front where the home hookers heeled to Pacey. but the supports failed to make use of the opportunity. A further essay saw Akuira hand to Walker and, although the winger had little enough room in which to work, he burst past Bevan to go over in the tackle of Simpson. Akuira 1 goaled from right out on the touch line. % • ~ - Old Boys io, Kaierau 0. With Williamson and Page collared in possession in close succession, Kaierau went off with the ball at their toes, hut Galpin fell on the leather to halt the advance. The same player was, however, guilty of picking out of tho scrum and the visitors essayed to goal, but the range proved to be too great and Carrington sent them hurrying back with a tremendous kick. Although Simpson accepted to kick out, the black rover was again to the fore when he burst through to the corner. Off-side gave Akuira a shot at goal from wide out, but he had his kicking boots on and he. found the uprights once again. Old Boys 13, Kaierau 0. Although the blacks were carrying practically all the attack. Simpson was proving very safe, and good work on his part enabled the reds to work to the assault, but their stay was brief, although inter-change passes between their forwards carried them deep into black territory once again, where Akuira—from an off-side position —was finally instrumental in clearing and an indifferent return by Bevan from a kick hy Page allowed Old Boys to go right down into the corner where Williamson accepted a clearance -to -mark and have a shot at goal, the ball falling under the bar. The visitors came awav in a stirring rush in which Morgan brought his forwards into action and Tremewan was halted just short of his objective, .Walker coming into play off-side to save by carrying over the goal line. Half-time found Old Boys again on the attack. VISITORS PILE ON POINTS. Hard on the kick out the home fifteen were compelled to force from a long kick by Stewftrt-and the succeeding kick out did net-bring any relief, a cut in by Scott prior to kicking to touch placing the' blacks on the defensive. A burst by Walker transferred play, but the reds were immediately back, Lockett and Tremewan being in the van. A free kick within good range gave Morgan a shot and he found the uprights with a nicely judged kick. K%*6rau 3, Old Boys 13. The blacks had some hot 'moments immediately following when a-succes-sion of cross kicks had the homesters on the run, the final recipient : ;being almost in when Walker grassed him and the forwards came to the-rescue. The visiting.forwards were .awiiming control in the tight work, while Morgan, who had come into the base of the scrum was securing- from-the majority of the scrums, although . his rearguard were not operating particularly freely as a combined force. Fielding a kick nicely, Bevan sent downfield and the leather worked into touch. The red forwards carried on further and, although Fletcher temporarily halted them, Brookie snapped up the ball to go over’ diagonally. Morgan goaled.

Kaierau 8, Old Boys 13.

With the rival combinations now within striking distance, play quickened up and a “sacks on the mill” ensued at the centre until Greville broke away with the ball at his toe, but Bevan stepped in to halt him and line out. Poor work by Williamson got his side into trouble and only the pace of Fletcher saved a certain try. Although Carrington brought relief, the reds came back, but they failed to penetrate and the homesters slowly, but surely forced the invaders back. Working the blind side of Morgan set the visitors hard on the attack and Fletcher was forced to carry back and a dean heel from the ensuing scrum allowed Stewart to score between the posts. Morjjun goaled and the rivals were on even terms. Kaierau 13, Old Boys 13. The visitors were decidedly unlucky immediately following when they went over the line only to be ruled out in the force. However, they gained their reward when, from some hot exchanges on the line, Lockett barged his way over for Morgan to goal. Kaierau 18 Old Boys 13. Time was called a minute later with the honours resting with the. visitors. Mr A. McKegg controlled the game.
