COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, Sept. 12. The monthly meeting of Pahiatua County Council took placo on Saturday last, Or S. Bolton presiding. The Minister of Public Works (Hon. E. A. Ransom) wrote with reference to tho council's application for assistance towards the maintenance of the Pahiatua Track deviation to Palmerston _ North. Tho Minister, after duo consideration, bad decided that in view of the fact that Government funds had been expended on the road during tho last few years, and moro particularly in view of tho fact that the present state of tho road was to. a very largo extent duo to neglect of maintenance by tho council, _ assistance from tho Government was not justified. “Apparently the district has lost a member and gained a Minister, 1 was the chairman’s comment. It was decided that a deputation wait on tho Minister. After considerable discussion and determined opposition on tho part of Crs Bissct and Cornelius, it was agreed to approve of tho proposal to become a party to tho appointment of a traffic inspector for No. 10 Wairarapa Highway District, tho Masterton County Council to bo the controlling authority. Cr Bisset objected to the idea of “looking for fines as a source of revenue.” Tho engineer reported that a tender of £1839 16s for Brown’s and Galvin’s bridges at Hamua was now in order and tho contract could bo proceeded with. HOPELANDS FACTORY. Tho annual report of the Hopelands Dairy Coy. disclosed a most successful year. A number of prizes wero gained at the Waikato, Now Plymouth, Wellington, Palmerston North, and Auckland shows. Tho statistics are as follow: —Cheese made 215 J tons; milk to lib of cheese, 9.091 b.

BOROUGH AFFAIRS. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) presided over tho monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening. The town water supply was severely criticised by a number of councillors. It ■vvas agreed that the present position was unsatisfactory. Cr Donald estimated that a new supply would cost about £22,000 which he said would mean duobling the-present rates. Tho Mayor explained that a pumping station could bo installed to .pump water from tho river to a reservoir in tho hills. Cr Murch remarked that the quality of tho water was one of its worst features. Enquiries aro to bo mado regarding an engineer’s report on tho water supply. A lengthy discussion took placo on whether “All Quiet on tho Western Front” should be purchased for rho library. After various opinions had boon expressed by councillors who had read the book, and others who had not, it was decided to hold the matter over for a month, presumably that tho councillors who had not read tho book might do so. Councillors referred to tho. numerous complaints concerning tho grazing of the children’s playground by large mobs of sheep which render it unfit for children to play on. Tho works committee will look into tho matter. Messrs Gardner and Yeo.nan were granted permission to lay a tramway across Scdcolo Street. Cr Tulloch pointed out that tho council should take steps to proceed with the erection of a new traffic bridge. The Mayor said that tho matter would bo looked into.

“Mironui,” the homo of Mr and Mrs W. D. Taylor, was tho scene of a surprise party on Saturday night last. Some thirty guests enjoyed a pleasant evening’s dancing interspersed with a number of games. Tho lady visitors provided a dainty supper. , , , Mrs B. H. Wills and family have returned homo from a holiday spent in Hawko’s Bay. Mrs A. Martin and her daughter, Mrs Gardner, of Pahiatua, have returned from a holiday spent in Masterton. Dr Gicscn, of Wellington, was a visitor to Pahiatua on Saturday.
