The value of building permits issued by the Auckland City Council for the first eight months of 1929 exceeds £1,000,000 and is larger by £152,471 than the value of permits issued in the corresponding period of 1928. The total value of the August permits. £112,176, is £25,750 less than in August of last year. Permits for the construction of houses numbered 44, an increase of 14 compared with August, 1928, thus continuing the trend toward activity in residential building. Making a personal explanation in the House of Representatives yesterdr- Mr J. A. Nash (Palmerston) stated that Mr T. IV. McDonald (Wairarapa), in the course of a speech on Friday, had said that certain land purchased by the Palmerston North Borough Council was valued at £2750. Mr Nosh had replied that the figure was £I6OO, thinking that it was correct. Apparently he had had another site in mind, and in justice to Mr McDonald he desired to say that his (Mr Nash’s) statement of the valuation was incorrect; but from the figure quoted by Mr McDonald (£2750) a sum of £350 should be deducted for a portion of the land retained by the department.
