SHANNON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 4. Mr and Mrs T. Dalzell are taking up their residence in Westport. Mr Dalzell has been for 17 years in the flaxniilling industry at Makerua and for the past 29 years a resident of this district. In his younger days Mr Dalzell ( was a Ilorowhenua football representative. Mr 12 T. Moody received the sad news of the death of bis sister in Dunedin, and left for the south on Monday. The annual meeting of the Shannon Fire Brigade was held on Monday evening, the superintendent (Air Jas. Curran) presiding. The Miranui ball committee waited on the meeting and handed over £7 3s 2d, the proceeds from their recent ball. In thanking the committee for their generous gift, the superintendent paid a tribute to the manner in which the ball was organised, and he hoped that other , bodies would assist in a similar way, when the borough would soon have an up-to-date fire brigade. The secretary (Mr H. E. Hook) in bis annual report stated that the progress of the brigade has been going on steadily during the past year, and new material, such as hydrants, nozzles and hose was added tio the plant. The brigade station and rooms, erected with voluntary labour, were during the year vested in the Borough Council. The kind and thoughtful action of local citizens inidionating chairs, etc., for furnishing the brigade meeting room had been greatly appreciated by the members of the brigade, it being actions of this kind that gave the brigadesmen encouragement to carry on. “The honorary members aro to bo thanked for their donations which were a great help in tho financial working of the brigade. The brigade has an energetic and keen head in' the person of their superintendent, Air Jas. Curran, and many thanks aro duo to him for the interest ho has taken in brigade matters. During the past year a series of dances were held with the idea of obtaining funds. The dances were a success and helped tho brigade over a lean period. Several new members were elected during the year, also tho fire police sworn in, all doing good work. During the coming year, it i 3 hoped to affiliate with the N.Z. Fire Brigades’ Association, also to insure the firemen against accident when on duty, and to procure working uniforms. The action of the Alayor (Air E. Butt) in donating a bag for accommodating the secretary’s books was appreciated. Four fires were attended during the year, the brigade doing good . work with the water supply available. All the members of the brigade have shown keen interest in the work which is very encouraging to an honorary secretary, and they are deserving of as much support as they are able to get from the public of tho borough. The year ended with a credit balance of £l2 10s lOd.” The following officers were elected: —Patron, the Mayor (Air E. Butt); superintendent, Air A. H. Hill; Lieutenant, Air H. E. Hook; Ist foreman, Air F. Haley; 2nd foreman, Mr \V. Woodmass; Ist branchman, Air Roberts; 2nd branchman, Air Alorse; secretary, Air H. E. Hook. Prior to vacating tho chair the superintendent was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his splendid efforts on behalf of the brigade, he being elected a life momber. There is no doubt that tho formation of the brigade and the healthy position in which it stands to-day are very largely duo to tho untiring efforts of Air Curran. He was mainly instrumental in getting tho present fire brigade station erected, and it was with great regret that Yhe members had to accept his resignation. He has set a standard which future superintendents will find it hard to live up to, it was stated. The secretary, Air H. E. Hook, was also accorded thanks for his work, the members considering themselves fortunate in having him in that position. He was asked to accept tho position of lieutenant, which he did.
