(From Our Own Correspondent). MARTON, Aug. 26. In a “500" tournament, in aid of the Hunterville Anglican Church, prizes were won by Messrs W. Shindle and L. Bilderbeck.

A masquerade ball held in aid of the town queen in the Marton jubilee carnival was a very successful affair and highly profitable. So popular was the function that similar gatherings are mooted in aid of other objects. Mrs T. O’Donnell, Mrs W. Baker, Miss A. O’Donnell, and Mesdames F. Purnell, J. Mogridge, A. Gracie, T. Barton, J. D. Gorrie, J. Connell, W. Barret and W. B. Lang6ton, as the committee, had much to do with the success of the ball.

A hockey match at Taihape between a local team and visitors from Raetihi resulted in a win for the former by five goals to four. At the Magistrate’s Court, Taihape, judgment for plaintiffs was given by default in the following undefended civil cases: —W. T. Harrison v. M. Tully, £2 18s 3d, costs £1 10s id; H. M. Hay v. McMann was ordered to pay Ray Winger, Ltd., £35 2s at the rate of £1 per month or suffer 28 days’ gaol. The Magistrate (Mr R. 31. Watson) refused to make an order in the case in which the Wanganui Herald Newspaper Co., Ltd., sued J. Joyce, blacksmith, Mataroa, on a judgment summons for £l9 14s 2d. Raymond Ward, Ohura, was convicted and sentenced to 21 days’ gaol for disobedience of a maintenance order in respect of his child, failure to provide birth expenses and failure to pay subsequent maintenance and solicitors’ fees. The warrant is to be suspended so long as defendant pays off the arrears, £2 12s 6d, at the rate of 10s a month and meets the present payments of 15s a week.

Competition at the weekly euchre party of the Anglican Church, Taihape, was extremely keen, so much so that four ladies tied for first prize. In the play-off, Mrs Beattie was successful. Mr G. Galvin won the men’s prize. Novelty awards wont to Mrs Healey and Mr F. Krugher. In reply to a resolution passed by the Hunterville Town Board against the . teaching of evolution under the new school syllabus, the Minister of Education (Hon. 11.
