In the course of. his annual report, Sir George Newman, Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Healthyj declares that Britain has arrived within sight of a stationary population. Sir George estimates that adults will be twice as numerous as children in 1941 completely reversing the situation before the war. Women of working age at present outnumber men by 1,250,000. Sir George Newman describes 1928-29 as the healthiest year recorded. Infant mortality touched the lowest point of 65 per thousand. On the contrary, the maternal mortality reached 42 per thousand—the highest recorded. Heart disease continues 'to be the chief cause of death, followed by pneumonia and diseases of the lungs.
