(From Our Own Correspondent.) BAINESSE, Aug. 23. No event is more eagerly looked forward to by the children than their annual carnival which is promoted by the teachers, and no stone is left unturned by the committee in assisting to ensure the children getting an. evening’s thorough enjoyment previous to the spring term holidays. The school proves all too small to accommodate visitors comfortably, and the gathering on Thursday night, which was almost a record ono, would have derived much more pleasure had the space not been so limited. The school was prettily decorated with chains of roses, balloons and greenery. Mrs Gray (head teacher) during the evening in a short address to the children referred to the assistant teacher’s good work. Miss McKenzie had done much for the children and she called for a vote of thanks from them by acclamation. The early part of the evening was taken up by the children whose art in dancing is a pleasure to watch. Several Maori children gave entortaining items. Barbara Tamiti and Ada Thompson, with chorus and ukclelo accompaniment, gavo a charming hula dance in native costume, and as an encoro gavo a haka with others which received a double encoro. An iced cake was won by Mr H. Sharland. Miss McKenzie supplied the music for all the dances. Mrs Scott and Mr G. Millard kindly played extras. A delightful supper was served by the ladies of the school committee.
