Mrs Mallory beat Miss Betty Nuthall,- 6—3, 6—3; Miss Helen Jacobs beat Miss Mary Greet (Kansas City), 6—2, 6—2. , , In the semi-demi finals or the women’s doubles, Mrs Covell and Mrs Shepherd Barron (England) beat Mrs Chapin and Miss Marjorie Gladman, 6_o, 6—l; Miss Betty Nuthall and Miss Helen Jacobs beat Misses Sarah and Mianne Palfrey (Brookline), 6—3, B—6; Mrs Michell and Miss Phoebe Watson (England) beat Mrs Wiglitman and Miss Marjorie Morrill, 6 —l, 6—3. Mrs Mallory’s victory over Miss Nuthall was as sensational as it was unexpected. The American lady, setting a terrific pace, overcame Miss Nuthall _in the surprisingly short time of 38 niinutes. It was a match that seemed filled with the longest and most breathtaking rallies. Mrs Mallory raked her opponent with forehand and backhand drives, wliioli kept Miss NutliDll running defensively along her baseline or retreating disastrously. Miss Nuthall made a desperate effort to retrieve the first set when it was 6 —3 against her by deucing the final game, and clinging to the decisive point for a time, but the American was at the top of her form and ended a duel with an untouchable placement. , In the second set Miss Nuthall stood 40—30 in the ninth game, and was momentarily likely to stave off defeat, but Mrs Mallorv was driving fiendishly. Miss Watson’s superbly-earned victory over Miss Cross was a demonstration of a player holding off against an opponent whose forcing shots were driving her ,into errors and then returning to take the victory on her own terms. Miss Watson lost the first set under an attack which she seemed unable to weather, but in the second settled down to a display of accuracy which gained her six games in a row, and left her opponent weary. The match between Miss Helen YY ills and Mrs Michell took only 22 minutes. In the first three games of the first set Mrs Michell took only three points, and although she managed to deuce the fourth and gain a 40-30 lead in the fifth, she dropped the sixth at love, and was simply overwhelmed by the terrific driving of Miss Mills. the second set was a virtual repetition. Miss Wills allowed her opponent five points in the first three games, and then dropped the fourth with a series of nets and outs, but she permitted her opponent only two points each in the last three.
