ESPLANADE GARDENS.

FRESH GREEN APPEARANCE. Green with the fresh vigour of early spring growth the trees and shrubs at the Esplanade at present have a bright appearance, and although few flowers have as yet unfolded delicate petals to betray with their fragrance the advent of the new season. Sweet scented daffodils are in bloom, but most of the other plants have not yet reached their full maturity. It is expected that in about two months the beautiful flowering shrubs will assume their spring garb. Not much new work has been undertaken recently at the Esplanade, but in accordance with a suggestion recently advanced trees of little ornamental value have been thinned out, and native trees have been planted. The two or thee hundred trees, mostly native which were planted in the botanical garden area, are reported .to be making good progress. For the past two years _ opossums have taken up their habitation in tne reserve, and they seem to be mcicasing in numbers, as they are heard fq ly at night, but no harm is being done by the animals, the cu-ator (M FBlack) informed a Standaid P sentative to-day. ,
