TEST CRICKET

SOUTH AFRICA v. ENGLAND. (Australian Press Association —United Service). LONDON, July 27. The fourth cricket Test match between South Africa and England commenced at Old Trafford to-day. The following are the teams: England : Sutcliffe, Bowley . Wyatt, Woliey, Hendren, -Leyland, Carr, Geary, Barratt, Duckworth and Freeman. South Africa: Seidle, aCtterall, Mitchell, Taylor, Morkel, Owen Smith, Deane, Vincent, Quinn, 801 l and Cameron. Despite the dull weather there were 20,000 spectators. It was realised that the South African team was stronger than when it lost at Leeds, and an exciting contest was hoped for. England won the toss and elected to> bat. Woolley came gallantly to England's rescue, making a third wicket stand with Wyatt—after two were down for 36 —that beat the previous highest such- partnership in matches the South Africans have played in Britain. The pair put on 245 in two and threee-quarter hours. The fielding of the visitors was good. The bowling of Morkel and Quinn obviously bothered Sutcliffe and Bowley, but did not perturb Woolley. The latter promptly walked into it in the most tradesmanslike manner, employing a variety of strokes and establishing his partner’s confidence, enabling him to score soundly and neatly. Eventually Woolley, who hit twenty 4’s, skied Vincent, whose catch concluded an innings not devoid of luck. Wyatt signalised his first Test appearance in England with a versatile, well-made 113, including thirteen 4’s. He ended by giving the wicketkeeper an easy catch through playing late.
