BREACH OF GAMING ACT.
CUSTOMERS GIVEN GIFTS.
SMALL FINE IMPOSED. TjTkUITI, July 29. In connection with the recent adoption of Saturday as the statutory halfholiday W. S. Blyth Harper, a chemist advertised that in commemoration of the change every tenth purchaser of goods from his shop would receive free gifts and two shillings in an envelope. The sequel to the enterprise was heard in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., when he was charged with “disposing of goods by means of a game of chance.” A plea of guilty to the charge was entered by Mr Hine, counsel for defendant, The police said only a technical breach of the Gaming Act had been committed. The defendant was a business man of repute in the town. A fine of 40s with costs 10s was imposed.
