The horse turned a somersault at the last fence, his hindquarters crashing on to Cairns, whose skull was badly fractured. Hugh Cairns, who was a New Zealander, was apprenticed to F. His only important win in the Dominion was on Riflemaid in the Wairarapa Cup of 1907. In Australia he rode tho winners of several of the most important races. Ho won the Melbourno Cup on Spearfelt in 1926 and the Australian Cup on the same horse the following autumn. He was associated with that great racehorse Henoic in the majority of his successes, which inoluded the Maribyrnong Plate, Ascot Vale Stakes, A.J.C. Champagne Stakes, A.J.C. Derby, Newmarket Handicap and Caulfield Guineas, while he also won tho latter race on Demetrius. His other wins on the flat include tho V.R.C. Bagot Handicap, the V.R.C. Debutant Stakes on King Carnival. Over fences, Cairns proved as able a horseman as on the flat. Ho won the V.R.C. National Hurdles twice—on Clontarf in 1914 and Merunqua in 1917 —while ho had a similar record in tho Australian Hurdle Race, winning on Van Hjomreigh in 1916 and on Falstaff in 1918. ENGLISH RACING.
