MATCH FOR BENNETT CUP. WIN FOR- PALMERSTON NORTH. ® With a leeway of one goal to make up at the end of the first spell, the Palmerston North Girls’ High in the annual hockey match with Dannevirke Girls’ High School team on Saturday netted three times after the interval and emerged the winners of tho Bennett Cup by 3 goals to 1. Dannevirko attacked hotly after the bully-off, T. McNicol making a smart opening on tho left wing, and tho Palmerston North goalie was called upon to stop somo stinging shots, several of which narrowly missed finding the net, but C. Kempson was equal to tho occasiion, and stalled off somo warm attacks from within the home circle. Palmerston North, after being kept on tho defensivo for a period, went away in a driving rush and, persevering, seriously threatened Dannevirke’s net, M. McColl being prominent, but her shots lacked direction. Dannevirke retaliated by taking the offensive and almost goaled, but M. Kempson hooked the ball out as it was dribbling into tho corner. Hot melees ensued in front of the Palmcrstion North goal, but effective stickwork kopt the visitors out until if. Cuff, right inner half for Dannevirke, penetrated tho defence with a quick shot which found the net nicely; Dannovirke 1, Palmerston North 0. Palmerston North came with a strong rush and a goal 6eemed imminent, but the goalie, N. Smith, saved beautifully, and extricated her side from a difficult situation. T. McNicol then broke away for Dannevirke with a clear run to the goal, but her attempt was frustrated, while another hard driving shot struck the post. Tho second spell opened with brisk exchanges, both sides showing good combination and giving a scientific exposition. Palmerston North pressed, and entered the Dannevirke circle in a strong rush. N. Smillie got her stick behind the ball a;vl. hitting it cleanly, scored a neat goal with a fine angle shot, evening the tally. Dannevirke 1, Palmerston North 1. In an effort to recover the lead, Dannevirke rallied and sent in somo hard shots, but tho goalie kept them out. Palmerstpn North then worked play back to tho other end, and, playing well, almost scored, but the Dannevirko goalie was difficult to pass, and kept the invaders at bay until M. McColl broke away brilliantly, and, manoeuvring into position, thrust through to net a good goal with a short shot, giving her side the lead. Palmerston North 2, Dannevirko 1. Play became faster, and from a struggle in front of tho Dannevirke goal K. Landers netted before tho ’keeper could recover after stopping a previous shot on her pads. Palmerston North 3, Dannevirke 1. Palmerston North, who had already found the net three times in the second spell, woro infusing greater dash into their play, and attacked repeatedly. M. McColl nearly found tho not again, but the Dannevirke goalie saved nicely and the game ended without further score. In a fast basket-ball match Palmerston North Girls’ High School defeated Dannevirko Girls’ High School by 19 to 8.
