CHRISTCHURCH FIRE.
VERY EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. Last night’s fire at the house of the Mayor, Mr Archer, was the eighth of a similar nature in the ci£y in the past three weeks. The total damage is estimated at £16,000. The police are investigating, but so far there is no trace to the criminals. Mr Archer’s loss by fire is £3OO. Ho believes that nothing was stolen. Tho thieves’ first attempt to get into tho house was through the breakfast roin. There are two sets of footprints, one large and the other much smaller, leading from the back of the washhouse across the garden to the breakfast room window, and marks on the catch of the window indicate that an attempt was made to force it. After being foiled in the attempt, it is believed that the thieves gained an entrance Ihrough one of the dining room windows.
