COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ BALL A BILLIANT FUNCTION. The commercial travellers can always be counted on to do things well, and tho decorations at the Showgrounds Entertainment Hall for their ninth annual ball far exceeded anything that has been seen in that hall before. Instead of the usual green lined walls, these were left practically plain, except for white pillars placed at intervals and holding just one pot of greenery. The lamps were shaded with lantern shaped shades of pink and green latticed ribbons. In betweon the lights and multicoloured streamers were Japanese lanterns and hanging baskets of ferns, making tho whole scheme one of lightness and artistry. The orchestra was well placed at the far end of tho big hall, whore ferns and greenery made a background. Tho adjoining hall had been transformed into a comfortable sitting out place with easy chairs, and literally hundreds of coloured lights twinkled through the greenery and the overhead streamers of shaded mauve and lycopodium. Tho supper room was roofed with blue and white streamers and tho tables looked most inviting. A very active hall committee consisting of the president, Mr J. Danks; past-pre-sident, Mr R. A. Metcalf; vice-presidents, Messrs B. Marsack and W. J. Day, and Messrs P. S. Rabone, H. Robinson, A. Stewart, W. McKegg, It. C. Batchelar, H. Redstone, J. Forsythe and W. Waters, and an energetic secretary, Mr J. (J. Brown,_and treasurer, Mr E. J. Mathews, left nothing undone to make the evening a huge success and everyone happy. It is doubtful whether there has over been such a largo crowd at any ball in Palmerston North, and it: must have been a huge undertaking to arrange and plan for tho comfort and enjoyment of everybody. Visitors were present from all parts of New Zealand and all were most enthusiastic over the arrangements and decorations. At an appropriate juncture the visiting travellers and their wives and the local members of tho C.T. and W.A. gathered in the committee room when Mr Brown proposed tho toast of the ball manager, Mr Danks. He considered that the ball had proved more successful than any previous one and tho credit was due to their president. Mr Danks, in reply, paid a tribute to the assistance given him by the members of the association. Other toasts honoured were “The Mayor of Palmerston North” and “Palmerston North Travellers.” In proposing the former, Mr C. Baddeley (Auckland) congratulated tho local committee on their success. In the Queen City they could not get 1100 people to a ball. Mr Graham, in reply, took the opportunity to thank the travellers for their good work on behalf of charity.
