(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, July 5. Rev. A. J. Farnell, vicar of Shannon, is attending the Synod at Wellington. On behalf of the Citizens Earthquake Relief Committee the town clerk on Tuesday forwarded £sß' to tho Treasury,, this being Shannon's) first contribution, Tho committee met on Tuesday evening, and it was decided that, as money was coming in so freely, it was not necessary to hold tho street stall that was previously decided on. The lists are to bo kept open tijl the-first week in August and contributions arc still qoming in freely. Mr Marks, the newly-appointed headmaster, is expected to commence his duties on Monday morning. Miss Dillen, of tho local school teaching staff, who has been away on a few days’ leave, returned on Thursday. The concert arranged pn behalf of the Parish Hail alteration fund and held in the Maoriland Theatre was well attended. The various artists received a good hearing, each item being much enjoyed. The second half of the programme was devoted to the sketch “Matilda’s Matrimonial Muddle.” This was excellently staged by six young men and caused much amuseinent.

The Women’s Institute met on Thursday afternoon when they tendered Miss Butt a “kitchen afternoon.” A very jolly afternoon was spent in games and competitions and Miss Butt was the recipient of many useful gifts. Airs Waring-Taylor, on behalf of the members, wished the guest of honour every happiness in her future life. The forthcoming children’s fancy dross ball, in aid of funds for the septic tank at the school, is expected to be a very successful affair. The teachers are at present working hard training the children in dances and games for the occasion, and a ladies’ committee has been sot up tp complete the supper arrangements.
