MONSTER FISH
TUNA STRANDED ON BEACH
Per Press Association
INVERCARGILL, Juno 10. There was stranded on Oroti Beach yesterday a monster fish which has been identified almost beyond doubt as a tuna, the king of big game fish. It was brought to Invercargill, and so far as is known this is the first tuna that has been found in New Zealand waters. The discovery of the tuna on Oreti Beach provided much food for speculation. Though it may be that the specimen found was one that had played truant from its school, and had inadvertently wandered into southern seas, it is, on the other hand, quite conceivable that many more of its fellows are in these waters. They are said to be the most erratic of fish, coming and going without any set rules, and it is quite possible that they have decided to take up their abode for a time at least in southern waters, despite tho fact that they are accustomed to warmer latitudes. If this is so Southland would become the rendezvous of anglers from all parts of the world. The belief that the tuna is the first to be found in the waters off the coast of New Zealand is strengthened by the fact that Messrs Hutton and Drummond’s book on the fish of New Zealand no reference is made to the tuna, nor does Mr Zane Grey in his recent book on his experiences of deepsea fishing in New Zealand refer to them.
