PNEUMONIA TREATMENT.

AUSTRALIAN’S INVENTION. The medical correspondent of the London Daily Mail describes a new method of treating pneumonia by injecting oxygen under the skin. He says that it is the invention of an Australian physician, Dr. Swift. The underlying idea is that if the lung becomes so blocked up that it cannot absorb air, as in pneumonia, equally it cannot absorb oxygen. The present method of letting oxygen escape over the patient’s face is unsatisfactory and wasteful, as much of tho gas is lost in the air. It is claimed that the new method of forcing oxygen under the skin of the chest, by means of a hypodermic needle, avoids any leakage, and makes absorption, easier, as it is dissolved directly into the blood stream.

Dr. Bryan Herbert Swift qualified at Cambridge University in 1916. He practised in North Adelaide before going to England. Dr. Swift served in the war and was awarded the Military Cross.,
