PURDY-HANCOCK FIGHT.
BELL NOT HEARD IN TERRIFIC DIN. NEWSPAPER’S COMMENT. Received June 8, 11.50 a.m. SYDNEY, June 8. Commenting on last night’s fight at the Leichardt Stadium, Hancock versus Purdy, the New Zealander, the Guardian states:—“When Purdy was knocked down in the fourth round he rose at the count of five, but was immediately dropped, again. The packed house screamed with excitement. The bell rang, but the uproar was so great that the referee did not hear it. He continued counting over Purdy, who rose at three, but was promptly knocked down again for eight. The din was still terrific, and when ho fell to the boards for the fourth time tho referee was still unaware that the gong had sounded and he crowned Hancock. Actually the bout continued for 25 seconds after the bell had rung. The first cable message rclativo to tho fight appears on page 15.
