HOCKEY TOURNEY

BUCKLAND CUP TO WOODVILLE. LADIES’ CONTEST DRAWN. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, June 4. Hookey enthusiasts had a gala day in Feilding yesterday on the occasion of the annual King’s Birthday tournament of the Feilding Hockey Association which, this year, was held-on the racecourse grounds through the courtesy of the Feilding Jockey Club. Clubs from all parts of the lower portion of the North Island were repre sented, the players numbering close on 700, while an exceptionally large crowd' of visitors attended the games throughout the day, the assemblage being the largest yet seen at a tournament in Feilding. To accommodate the players eight grounds were in constant use and it is to the credit of the officials of the association and Mr H. Toye, who acted as tournament secretary, that the large programme was got off with a minimum of delay. The grounds were in excellent order and stood up to the hard usage they were subjected to, with the result that each game was a keen and fast contest, the smallness of the scores throughout the day testifying to this nlso. The trophies competed for were the Buckland Cup for the men’s five-asirle games and the Dainties Cup for the ladies’ seven-a-side, the holders last year being respectively United (Dannevirke) and Lower Hutt A. Local enthusiasts were more than delighted with the success of the two home teams —Hinekoa (ladies) and Carnarvon (rpen), the former fighting out a hotly contested final with Dannevirke _ Old Girls, while Carnarvon were eliminated, by Woodville in the last game of the semi-finals.
