KIA TOA’S DOUBLE SUCCESS

Yesterday afternoon a large crowd, estimated at about 3000, witnessed excellent football at the Showgrounds, when the Alanawatu Rugby District Council’s seven-aside tourney was concluded. The play was very fast and spectacular and the conditions were ideal.

In the senior grade Kia Toa eliminated Feilding in the final match by 13 points to three. In the junior grade, Kia Toa A. beat Kia Toa B. (who played in Feilding Club jerseys) by 6 points to 3. Oriental beat Old Boys in the final of the third grade by 6-nil. and Terrace End won the primary schools’ event from College with an eight points margin, the score being 11-3. Oriental were last year's winners of the senior grade (Thompson-Payne Cup) St. Pat’s B. team winning the junior section (Rogers Cup). Old Bovs A. were the holders of the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup in the third grade, while Rongotea won the Boon Cup for competition in the primary schools grade at the same time. This vear the trophies ail changed hands. SENIOR SEMI-FINALS. Feilding met Huct in the first senior semi-final and the former set up a stiong attack. A series of struggles on the fault line saw R. Darragh go over and the extra points were added, bedding maintained the pressure, but in the second sped Hutt made a better showing. An infringement gave them a shot at goal, but tne ball went wide. Feilding were awarded a free kick from a very easy position a few minutes later, but the effort to goal failed, throwing the ball a.bout, bedding gained ground, despite a stubborn deience. Hutt made a break-away but a bad pass saw Thomas secure and go over to score for i pl 6 was then called with the score 5-nil in favour of Feilding. The Oriental-Kia Toa game opened at a fast clip, which was maintained throughout. Oriental opened up with a forward attack and hemmed in Kia Toa for a few minutes, strange, however, turned defence into attack and put in a good run upheld to .outpace his opponents and score. Mullins added the extra points. Oriental came back to the offensive and kept Kia Toa active on the defensive. A scrummage occurred handy to Kia Toa s line and Oriental, went over. The kick railed. Mullins enabled Kia Toa to invade Oriental’s territory with a line kick and. following a line-out, AA aslev secured and went over. Mullins faded to convert. Oriental were handling the ball well and play went to Kia Toa's twentv-five. sound handling saw their backs' in action after a scrummage in front of Kia Toa's goal, and Oriental earned a good try. The kick raised the flags. Time was up when both scores were level and extra time had to be played. Kia Toa attar-red and Conrad put the finishing touch to a cood movement by scoring under the posts after a sound run. THE FINAL. Kia Toa ooened the senior final by placing Feilding on the defensive. Hard and fast play followed at midfield with the ball being handled well. Aluilins secured and used his turn ot speed to race along the line and cut in to score. He converted his trv. Feilding put in a pretty passing rush and deeply invaded Kia Toa s twentyfive. but a handv scoring position was lost’through obstruction. Feilding returned to the attack and a iielc k.ck bv R. Darragh was well foliowed_ up, Kia Toa being compelled to torce down. Kia Toa set off upheld and AA'aslev picked up. The ball went to Crawford, who handed it to Strange. Kia Toa A and B teams met m the J final of the junior grade, the tormer ! opening the game with a forward attack. The B team soon reversed the ! tactics and the play was transferred to the other end of the fi-ld. A long ! field kick ended in the A team s fullback teing caught in possession on his ! goal-line and a scrum followed. Ihe i defenders, ho.vever, cleared and turned defence into attack. A. Powell had a shot at goal from a penalty and the ball sailed between the posts. The B team adopted an offensive game .and a drop-kick just want a shade wide ot the posts, but Simpson, following up well, scored as time was called. THIRD GRADE FINAL. The third grade final between Old Bovs and Oriental was a poor game. Oriental scored in the early stages, following concerted team work.. The kick was unsuccessful Bustling the blacks, Oriental invaded Old Boys twenty-five repeatedly, but the first spell ended without further score. Oriental kept up the attack and showed to advantage in passing rushes and a combined movement resulted in a well deserved try being annexed. Ihe kick failed. Old Boys made repeated attempts to break away, but time was called with the score of 6-nil in favour of Oriental. Souter and Millicken were the scorers. ADDITION AL REbULTS.
