NORFOLK ISLAND STORES SUFFER. “MALEVOLENT SPIRIT.” (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, June 3. “A distinctly malevolent spirit lias been manifesting itself on,, e ,. is ? n of late,” writes the Herald s Norfolk Island correspondent. “One storekeeper had a 561 b box of butter lifted from his verandah one night and dropped down a deep well. “Some miscreant crawled under tlio shop of another storekeeper ana through cracks between the “ oor boards ripped a number of sugar bags with a knife, allowing the sugar to run to waste. Last week the same storo was entered by raising a corner of the roofing iron. The floor was strewn with tea and perishable goods. The owner’s watch was lifted from its hook and stamped under foot. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
