KING’S BIRTHDAY RACES.

PAITONU WINS AT OTAKI.

GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLES TO

URALLA.

The King’s Birthday race meetings were continued yesterday at Otaki, Auckland and Dunedin. _ The limi Kara Memorial at Otaki was won by the favourite, Paitonu, while Consent was successful in the Taipua Handicap. . A surprise was created at Auckland by Uralla s win m ilie Great Northern Hurdles; the King George Handicap went to Lucy Bose. At Dunedin, Lancer won the Otago Hurdles.

RACING AT OTAKI. rAITONU CAPTURES BIG EVENT. SPRINT HONOURS TO CONSENT. INCREASE IN TOTALISATOR RETURNS. Brilliant weather conditions favoured the Otaki Maori Racing Club for the concluding day of its winter meeting yesterday, when patrons were present from all quarters of the southern portion of the North Island. Betting activities were eonsequentlv brisk, the sum of £27,828 being handled for the day as compared with £25,321 10s for the second day last year, and making an aggregate of £44,739 10s as again,st £40,247 in 1928—an increase oi £4492 10s. Paitonu, who had to be content with second honours to Lady Liniond in the Raukawa Cup on the opening day, made amends yesterday when he led Teheka and Maui home in the Ta Tirni Kara Memorial Stakes, while in the Taipua Handicap—the open sprint—Consent improved on his second of Saturday 'bv scoring from First Acre and Royal Game, L. G. Morris thereby riding the winner of the two principal events. AN IMPROVED SHOWING.

All 10 acceptors went to the poet in the Pukehou Hack Hurdles, Red Bank (£513) being preferred to Trcvham {£4oo), who was making his debut at the jumping game, with a marked drop to Lady Gay (£241). Snocrer and Red Bank were the early leaders from l’eshwa, Sir Moment and Trcsham, but the last-named improved his position going away from home. After negotiating the second fence in the back straight Modern was attending Red Bank with llakauponga ahead of Trcsham and, with the inside batten of the final fence flattened backers of Trcsham were confident of success. However, Modern was going strongly and. although Red Bank could not foot" it with the other pair on the flat, Trcsham could not reach Modern in the run home, the latter clearing away to win by six lengths from Tresham with Red Bank a further two lengths back. Rakauponga was right up fourth with Sir Moment, Lady Gay and Peshwa next. It was a considerably improved performance on the part of Modern as compared with his first day’s showing. GRATTAN WINS AT LAST.

With Golden Flower the sole absentee from the Waikanac Hack Scurry, a two division race was necessary, although the totalisator was opened but the once. Trench Raid (£622) wound up a good favourite but there was strong support for Nasscllc (£597), the pair being drawn in the same division, while Animated (£402) and Grattan (£302) were next in favour. Grattan, from an inside position, began smartly to lead Roundelay, Warzono and Nasscllc along the back to the turn for home where Catena worked in behind Grattan and Warzono with Nasscllc, Moutoa Fume and Roundelay next. The leading trio were practically in lino as they turned into the straight, but over the final pinch Grattan held ofE Warzono to win by a length with Nasscllc two lengths back and ahead of Catuna, King Hal, Trench Raid, Roundelay, Advcntus and Aloutoa Fume. A BIG SURPRISE.

Kotahi Eka was smartest to begin of tifie second division and the Acre gelding led Pompadour, Werata, and Animated across the top where Werata commenced to make a forward move, Pompadour, Half

Acre and Wine Tray being his nearest attendants of a well strung out field. At the distance Kotahi Eka was well clear of Werata, hut tho latter gradually overhauled the loader to win by a neck with Great Lady, who came strongly from the turn, a length and a-half behind Kotahi Eka. Pompadour was fourth with Animated, Wine Tray and Painting next. PAITONU MAKES GOOD.

Trcsham and Gold Bag wore absentees from tlie Ta Timi Memorial Stakes, leaving the good field of 15 horses to go to the post. Paitonu (£727) was onco again installed favourite from Briar Root (£659) and Spcartniss (£582), but, unlike on the opening dav, the favourite returned his backers the' major dividend on this occasion. Tcheka was hurried to the front in company with Briar Root when the tapes were released, and the pair led 1 attonu, Kilbronsyth, Maui and Merry Damon past the stands. Going along the hack Anolo, Shrewd and Borsaleno made forward moves and passing the five ftirlong post the order was 'tcheka and. Briar Root two lengths clear of Anolo, Kilbronsyth, Paitonu, Shrewd, Borsalene, Mam and Merry Damon. Approaching the straight entrance Paitonu moved up to the leaders and in the run home wore them down to score from Tcheka by a length and a-half, Maui getting up to head olf Briar Root. Merry Damon was fifth and then there was a gap to Kilbronsyth, Henna and Shrewd. BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY.

Royal Black (£1204) was made a very warm order for the Rangiuru Hack Handicap, the topweight carrying twice as much as Fine Acre (£690) and Kiriana (£643). Money Mint and First Acre went out to make tho pace from Monetize and Marjoram, tho field racing in that order along the hack and across the. top where Royal Black improved his position. Money Mint ran wide at tho turn and Monetize and Royal Black came through the gap. Tho latter ranged up to Fine Acre inside the distance and appeared to have the raco won, hut Webster drove his mount along and Fine Acre came again to win by a head, there being a gap of four lengths to Marjoram. Monetize, who weakened in the last few strides, was fifth with Fallow and Kilorcll next to finish. A GREAT RACE.

Joy Bird and Brown Sugar failed to put in an appearance in the 'l'aipua Handicap in which Consent (£1445) and First Acre (£787) were the best hacked, although there was good support for Moutoa Treasury (£750). A beautiful dispatch saw the field race in line for the first furlong. Consent, Dobbin and Broad Acre finally forging ahead from Toapaiti and First Acre. Dobbin dropped back on to the rails leaving Consent, and Broad Acre to make the pace, but approaching the entrance to the straight First Acre came up to the leaders and, in company with he favourio, drew clear of Broad Acre', (i splendid finish finding Consent answer to punishment to hold off the challenger and prevail by a head. A length and a-half back canto Broad Acre with Dobbin right up. There was a gap to Bonogno, Last Crust and Moutoa. Treasury.

MOTH PLANE COMES FAST TO WIN. With Bissac the solo absentee from tho Ohau Hack Handicap, there was a, field of 14 runners presented, Metcilus (±/lluyj being the favourite with High Society £735) and Monsogno (£500) next m demand. Monsogne and High Society led Vindication and a bunched field on to tho courso proper, but places underwent quick changes and when they had settled down Vindication and Malahat were, in front ot Vinolla and High Society. The last named dropped back suddenly at the turn, while Vincllla. worked up to Vindication with Otauru Doss, Malahat, Arrow Boy, Call Again and High Society next. Rounding tho turn Mothplano moved up qu'i'kly and was in behind Vindication and Vinella at tho entrance. Mothplane immediately ran past tho leaders, but over tho last few yards bad to be stirrod up to hold oil a late challenge from Malahat,

a half length separating tile pair, with i Vinella a length and a-half back. Metellus and High Society, neither of whom enjoyed the best of runs, were divided by Monsogne. FANCIED CANDIDATES BEATEN. ,AU 10 acceptors went to the post in the Oliau Hack Handicap, a great betting race finding Le Champ (£1009) installed favourite from flic first day’s winner, Second Thought (£991), and Lucky Bay (£836). Lucky Bay, from flic inside position, was smartest to begin, but was immediately attended by J.o Champ, Golden Flower, Second Thought, Australis and Austerity. Turning into the straight Australis got a run on the rails and was up with Lucky Bag and Le Champ at the distance. Both of the early pneemakers failed to go on with it and Australis strode on to enjoy a two length victory from Second Thought, with Moutoa Wonder, who had been last to move out from the barrier, two and a-half lengths further hack. Le Champ struggled on into fourth place with Golden Flower next. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. ) rUKEHOU HACK HURDLES, of 130 sovs.; second horse 20 sovs. and third 10 sovs. One mile and a half. 4 Mr J.
