RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Racing- at Ellerslie, Otaki and Dunedin on Saturday.

Dainty Ways has joined up -with J. Ayers at Trentham.

Imperial Fame pulled up lame after exercise at Hastings and has in consequence ,been eased up. Tanetoa, who sustained a rick while racing at the Waikato meeting, has been on the easy list since. The unruly Inferno continues to live up to his name, it being stated that when sent out to negotiate the battens at Trentham ho is apt to run off and jump the steeplechaso fences. •* Tresham is reported to be doing well in liis schooling efforts at Trentham and bids fair to do good service in this department. Of a good stamp, the black gelding should prove to be an ideal type. With but five defections from the Tararua Hack Hurdles at Otaki on acceptance night there are left a dozen prospective runners to contest the jumping event, Awapuni one entrant, Red Bank being now top weight.

Originally G. New furnished a trio of nominations for the Waitohu Hack Handicap, but Lucrctia has been withdrawn and Grand Aero and Lucky Bag will now represent that' stable, the pair being the only locals therein. Two distinct possibilities figuring in the race are Second Thought and Propaganda.

The Raukawa Cup Handicap at Otaki had attracted no less than 26 nominations, but 10 of the number dropped out on acceptance* night. Baitonu, Tresham and Merry Damon, the topwoights, still stand their ground, Atho’spear being the only member of the 8.0 or over division to be now numbered among the missing. Starboard Light, who had been included, is reported to have been sold to go to Australia along with Ilclotis. The fair field of 10 runners is promised in tho Otaki Hack Handicap, run over, a distance of a mile and 55 yards, Imperial Fame, Monetize, Tunbridge, Merry Mason and Kilorcll being defections. The last-named has been allowed. to remain ill the seven furlong event in proference —a position of affairs which is in some respects surprising in view of the fact that Kilorell is usually a little slow to find his feet.

With Keddar having gono through to tho Ellerslie fixture, the Trentham trained Oratrix now fills the role of topweight in the open sprint at Otaki, Piuthair, who will be making her first appearance for some time past, being but 21bs further removed. Atholspear is again numbered among tho absentees, while tho three hacks who had come in on the minimum Propaganda, Grand Acre and Second Thought, have likewise dropped out. The big field of 17 remain with Consent, Dobbin, Bonogne, First Acre and Broad Acre, all possibilities. Monsogno, who won a double at the Hawera fixture, in the Te Horo Hack Handicap at Otaki, is topweight now that Brown Sugar has dropped out. In all, eight of tho original number have signified that they i decline their engagement in the seven fttalong event, but, with 14 still carded, a good race is assured and, with Monsogne, Marjoram, High Society and Metellus among tho number, the selection of their favourite by the public might take a wide range. With 26 maidens figuring in tho Kuku Maiden Race there is a distinct possibility that a two division contest will bo necessary, and it is to be hoped that the Otaki Club does not follow the example of Wanganui by opening tho totalisator but once. Eight two-year-olds are included in the field and they are in receipt of, lOlbs from their elders. Zarene probably has the best qualifications of the youngsters, but there are several of the older brigade such as Bon Acre,, Callagain, Fortalice, Golden Flower, Grattan, Naselle, Plano; Vinolla and Warzono.- who have ifiado favourable showings in public previously. Incidentally, the maiden is the second race on the programme.

Teri wont wrong on the trip to Egmont; .in fact, was not really himself when ho went away, but was expected to make amends on the trip, comments a Wairarapa writer. He is now nursing the near foreleg. The trouble is in the ligament. His trainer has decided on a lengthy spell, so ho is to be blistered and turned out. It will be no surprise to see Teri contesting hurdle races next winter if tho rest has tho desired effect. He should make a good hurdler. Since racing at the Franklin meeting Fairy Bello -has been doing easy tasks under J. D. Kemp’s supervision at Ellerslie. This filly is to be kept in steady work until next spring, although sho will not race in the meantime.

The Cornwall Handicap candidate Eager Roso is reported to be making good progress under A. Kemp’s care at Ellerslie and to have nover looked better than she docs at tho present stage. The Day Comet mare acts well in any ground and sho is one of the most likely of those on the minimum to shpw up in the ten-furlong race on Saturday. <

Lady Spalpeen has shown ability over hurdles and has been placed in four out of fivo starts this season. She is among those engaged in hack events at the Great Northern meeting, and she should not be long in collecting a stake.

Cybele is among those engaged in the Penrose Hurdles on the first day of the Ellerslie meeting. This mare won well at the Waikato meeting and gave promising displays at Wanganui, improving with each outing. In fact, in her last effort she was fourth. Cybele should run well at the Great Northern meeting. Few recruits to the jumping game have shown more promise than Sleepy Sol is doing in his schooling efforts over hurdles, and ho should certainly make good in the new department, writes “Whalebone.” A feature of his jumping is the confident style in which he goes at the obstacles and his quickness in getting away from his fences.

Indolent ran two good races at tho Waikato meeting last month, being narrowly beaten in the Linley Hack Handicap, one mile, on the first day, and winning the Huntly Hack Handicap, of a similar distance, on the concluding day. This horse is engaged in the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie, and if he has gono on the right way in the meantime will have a chance.

Bisox did not impress at either Hawera or Wanganui, but the recent racing she had should do her good. Last season she performed well at the Wellington meeting and a few weeks later won tho Winter Cup at Riecarton, while in the spring the Avondale Cup was al6o captured by her.

Maidos is included in the field for the Green- Lane Steeplechase at Ellerslie and if he starts can be depended upon to run a good race. He won nicely at Wanganui over two miles and ha 6 only 61b more to carry in the event mentioned on Saturday. 'Ripon Abbey did not stay on too well at either Hawera or Wanganui and he will need to do better to have a chance at Ellerslie. However, when properly right he can go very' fast in a mile and a-half hurdle race.

The Wanganui (?) horseman 11. Burt has been engaged to- ride Comical in the Guest Northern Hurdle Race, states the Auckland Star.—While Burt is not now seen a great deal at the local tracks, he is still a resident of Palmerston North. —“Binocular.”' ' WINNING TRAINERS. J. P. COYLE WELL PLACED. Last season the Awapuni mentor, G. W. New, headed the trainers’ championship table for the Dominion, and a. Palmerston North horseman in T. Green topped the winning jockeys’ list; The same good fortune has not befallen the pain this season and it would appear at this stage, unless something unforeseen happens, that the honours in both instances will pass to the South Island, C. Giesler being clear of a fellow southerner in F. P.» Claridge in the mentors’ list, while A. E. and L. J. Ellis arq fighting for leadership on the

jockeys’ However, it is pleasing to note that Palmerston North mentors and horsemen are once again prominently placed, J. P. Coyle, who has a comparatively small team of horses, being fourth on the list, with Mrs A. McDonald seventh, they having 23 and 20 wins respectively, while G. W. New and L. Knapp are on terms with 17 each. Further dbwn the list come G. Jones with 10 wins, R. E. Hatch with six, E. W. Watson with five, J. M. Hastie with four, H. H. Doyle with two and C. P. Nash and F. R. Waller with one each, making in all 106 winners to have been presented from this centre for the 1928-29 season. R. REED IN THE RUNNING. Tho local horseman, R. Reed, who attended his fellow townsman, T. Green, on tho winning jockeys’ list last season with 173 riding successes —two less than Green —is once again well placed on the jockeys’ table with 47 wins, although the two southerners, A. E. Ellis and L. J. Ellis, lead him with 53 and 50 respectively. Green, on the other hand, has retreated to eighth position with 34 points, being attended by C. W. France with 31 wins and R. J. Mackie with 30. Other local horsemen figuring in tho official list are as under: —A. G. Murray with 20 successes, T. Metcalf and A. W. McDonald with

19 each, K. Yoitre with 18, C. Broughton with eight and A., E. Stratton, J. Blanche and C. Robinson with four each. Although not in tho Hst, R. G. Stratton and W. Broughton have had at least one riding success to their credit. Thus at least 240 winners have been ridden by local horsemen. POURI SCRATCHED FOR G.N. HURDLES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 27. Pouri was scratched for tho Great Northern Hurdles at 6.40 to-night. AUSTRALIA NRACING. SYDNEY, May 27. Wedding March and Roman Abbey have been scratched for tho A.J.C. Hurdles and Steeplechaso. Tiji, which strained a tendon, has boon scratched for all engagements. TROTTING. Per Press Association.' ASHBURTON, May 27.
