Tho Foxton juniors suffered their first defeat on baturday when Shannon beat them in their return match on the victor’s homo ground. Proctor scored Foxton’s only try and Huff converted. Tho game ended: Shannon 16, Foxton 5. Tho friends of Mr J. Mansfield will regret to learn that there is no improvement in his condition and that he is still seriously ill in the Palmerston North hospital. There has been a “general post” in the local post office staff. All the senior members have been or are about to bo transferred on promotion. This speaks well for tho training and experience gained locally, although it is questionable whether 6iich a clearance is appreciated by the postmaster, Mr J. Hewton. The funeral of the late Mrs I. Gibb took place -on Friday afternoon. Rev. W. H. Nicholas conducted a service at the residence of Mr John Ross prior to the cortege leaving the house and at. the graveside. A representative gathering followed tho remains to their last resting place, and the casket was carried with floral tributes. ' On Thursday night the Town Hall presented a pleasing spcctaelo when tho ladies of All Saints’ Guild held their annual Children’s Ball. The hall had been prettily decorated by Messrs Warwich, Harris, Reid and F. Proctor, junr. Promptly at 7 the doors were opened and soon the Hall was filled with the sound of happy laughter. During the evening Mrs M. Ross supplied tho music for the children, and at the adults’ dance, Mr M. E. Perreau and Mr Walton acted as M.C.’s and Mr J. Newton pianist. A six-roomed dwelling house and contents owned and occupied by Mr A. S. Deuch, was destroyed by fire shortly after 5.30 o’clock on Saturday morning. The occupants lit the fire and had a cup of tea prior to going out to milk. Subsequently smoke was seen to issue from tho dwelling and the family rushed, back but were only able to save some bedding. Tho house was insured for £6OO and the contents for £2OO.
