FOXTON NOTES

BOWLING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, April 12. A gamo for the Dixon Cup will bo played at tho Oroua Club’s green ; (Feilaing) on Saturday, when Foxton will attempt to sustain their first challenge this season. Tho Foxton rink will bo Hcycs, Jno. Ross, Nyo, Thomson (skip). Yesterday afternoon a further match for tho Nyo Ferns was played on the local green, when the holders—Scadden, Ncwth, J. Thomson, Christio (skip)—staved off tho challengers—Hamer, 1 Hcppnor, Hcycs, Walker (skip)—tho scores being 23 to 19. Wednesday of next week will be notable on the local green for tho fact that five rinks, representing Northern, Manawatu, Terrace End, Palmerston North and Takaro Clubs will pay a friendly visit. Mr C. M. Hcwctt, manager of tho local branch of tho Commercial Bank, resumed duty yesterday after being absent on his annual leave. Mr H. G. Gregory, who was acting manager during Mr Hewctt’s absence, returned to Palmerston North yesterday. Mrs Locke, of Auckland, is on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Harris, of Foxton.

Mr W. Hart, of Palmerston North, was a visitor to Foxton last week.

At the quarterly meeting of the Methodist Church, Rev. J. H. Edmondson occupied the chair. Mr J. Chrystall (circuit steward) presented tho quarterly balancesheet which was considered most satisfactory. Mr Chrystall then gavo a resume of the year’s finance which showed a circuit incomo of over £4OO, a large debit balance on Ist of April, 1928, having been wiped out by 31st March, 1929, and a small credit balance was now in hand. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies’ guilds of Foxton and Shannon for their untiring efforts and willing scrvico on behalf of the church. A most satisfactory report was received on behalf of tho Sunday school and tho thanks of tho meeting wero tendered to Mr and Mrs Huntley and staff for their patient labour and self-sacrificing devotion oil behalf of tho youth .of tho church. It was resolved to' mako the annual appeal on behalf of foreign missions during tho ensuing,quarter. Tho president of conference, Rev. J. Goldie, of Solomon Islands, is to visit Foxton on April 26th, and will be accompanied by Nathan Kora, a Solomon Island native. Tho Shannon Church anniversary is to be held on the first Sunday in May, and tho Shannon Sunday School anniversary later in the month. At the closo of the meeting refreshments were provided. On tho motion of Mr Chrystall a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Edmondson for her hospitality.
