RATING ON SHOWGROUND.
REDUCTION DESIRED. MASTERTON, April 11. The remit carried at the recent municipal conference, urging ail amendment of the Valuation of Land Act in connection with the rating of showgrounds, was the subject of some discussion at a meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, when a letter on the subject was received from the A. and P. Associations of the North Island. After quoting the proposed amendment, the letter asked that, the association register an immediate protest by writing to the Minister of Internal Affairs. It was pointed out by Mr J. M. James that some show societies were in the unfortunate position of having 40 or 50 acres of land in boroughs. All land used for 6how purposes should pay only .on the rateable value of the county. - The matter was an old-standing one with the Manawatu A. and P. Association, said Mr Duncan McGregor, who considered that, as the Act stood, an association was able to obtain a reduction in valuation. That was all that could reasonably be asked for. The secretary (Mr R. H. Williams) stated that he _ understood that the Manawatu Association had obtained a reduction from £2OO to £66 a year /-.J*' 3 a s_ men 'fck )ne d Jiy the chairman (Mr W. F. McLaren) that the Masterton Association paid £29 14s 7d, in rates to the Borough Council, and £43 to the cdunty. Eventually it was decided, on the motion of Mr"R. J. Barton, that application be made to the Valuer-Gen-eral for a reduction in accordance with the Act.
