ANNUAL SPORTS

POHANGINA VALLEY CLUB. A DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON. Of a very diversified nature, sports events in several of tho many branches being embodied, the fourth annual gathering conducted by the Pohangina Valley Sports Club on the Ashhurst racecourse yesterday proved an unqualified success. From an early hour proceedings were set in swing and were continued without any marked abatement throughout the full course of the afternoon jumping events, foot running, cycling and numerous competitions, which were open to all, figuring on the extensive programme. With Patron T. Close, President J. B. Balmer and Secretary J. A. McDonell at the helm, the programme was gone through without a hitch, and they were given excellent assistance by a live and energetic committee. The following gentlemen assisted in official capacities:—Horse events: Mr A. Ayres, judge; Mr D. Caldwell, starter. Foot events: Messrs C. Stevens, W. W. Gibb, and H. Bristow, judges; Mr F. Aislier, liandicapper; Mr J. D. Galvin, starter; ' Messrs R. MacDonald and AY., Howell, directors of sports, and Messrs E. Leamy and G. R. Taylor, treasurers. THE PROGRAMME. The jumping events, which were contested over four batten fences, a board fence and a brush fence, attracted strong competition and some excellent displays were witnessed. The Collinson and Cunninghame Cup, for the champion hunters’ event, was won by Mr W. Hobson, of' Takapau, with his horse, Max, the winner giving a finished display. At the conclusion of the. contest the challenge trophy was presented ,by Mr Balmer who congratulated Mr Hobson on liis success —a victory which had been fully merited —whale he expressed the hope that next year Would find him ngain in the ranks of the competitors. There was presented in tire maiden hunters’ competition a well-known figure of the turf in Otauru Kid and the aged Campfire gelding duly triumphed. In the open hunters’ steeplechase, another Hawke’s Bay visitor' carried off the honours, Mr A. W. Parsons, of AVaipukurau, scoring with Vernie. By that success he annexed the cup which had been offered by Miss Irene Rutherford, of Alfredton. In the consolation hunters’ competition, Mrs A. McDonald, following upon her being unplaced in the champion class, scored with her well-known show ring performer, Workman, the hurdling horseman, Alan McDonald, being in the saddle. Some promising pony jumpers were also seen in action, Mr A. H. Benton, of Newbury, winning in this section with Dainty Step. Although distemper has made temporary inroads in the ranks of local whippets, there was quite a strong team of dogs present to compete 111 the programme of events staged, the races being run under the control of officials of. the Manawatu Whippet Club. The principal event, the Ashhurst Cup, was won by Mr A. Phillips with his representative, Sandy, who scored in Iris heat and again in the final off the 14 yards mark, following upon close and exciting contests/ a bare head separating the winner from Te Cleve who ran in the same interests. That success gave Mr Phillips the cup which had been donated by Mr N. D. Stubbs. In makiug the presentation, Mr AV. Howell, one of the directors of the sports, paid tribute to the assistance which had been given his club by the whippet enthusiasts and predicted that the sport, by virtue of the high interest it had created, would continue to develop.
