RACING NEWS.

FROM STAffLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Racing at Mastcrton to-morrow. It ia probable that •Papcrchaso will bo retired to the stud. A. Goodman has tired of Inferno and the Absurd—Ayah gelding has been turned out. The Atom (Solferino —Theda) was sold recently for 22£gns and Bon Raid (Night Raid—Bon Spec) for 20gns. T. Green, who rode Honour to victory in the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes on Easter Saturday, earned a fee of £244 3s thereby. Poetess, the half-sister of Gay Sonnet, is reported from the south to be on the improve and may consequently do better before the season closes. The Dove changed hands during the progress of the Westport meeting, Mrs A. Champion, owner of Arch Arrow, being the purchaser. Tho Arrowsmith filly is speedy over a short course. Euphonium is stated to bo a regular attender at the tracks in Hawera and the old fellow is putting plenty of dash into his pace work. Tho Elysian gelding’s last appearanco was in tho Marton Cup in January, 1928. Eaglet, a member of J. T. Jamieson’s stable at Takanini who has shown splendid form this season, was sired by Chief Ruler from Dovelct, the dam being an Aus-tralian-bred mare by Malster —San Dove. The injury that Goodwill sustained when travelling from 'l'rontham, and which prevented him starting at the Manawatu autumn fixturo, is roported to be yielding to treatment and tho gelding should be soon at his best again. Tho Riccarton trainer, _ F. D. Jones, brought back to the Dominion with him a bay gelding by Red Dennis from a mare by Bowman. Red Dennis sired a Melbourne Cup winnor in Sister Olive and at 45gns the golding should prove a good speculation. Amongst tho yearlings running on tho Karamu Estato in Hawke’s Bay is a halfbrother by Arausio to Millais. Liko his relation, ho was bred and is owned by Mr Frank Ormond. ' From tho sire’s side, the name of Auctioneer secm3 rather appropriate for a son of Gasbag, and Martina who is thus a half-brother to Hytinus, Slave Mart and Martinique. After having had a long spell, Thaw has been returned to tho active ranks and is once again a member of W. Raynor’s team. While looking on the big side, the eon of Limond has done a good deal of hill work during his absence. , One of the veteran brigado in Georgo Laing is now attached to tho training lodge of W. McKinnon at Grecnmcadows. Laing was at one time in charge of tho teams of Messrs J. D. and Frank Ormond at Waipukurau. Cimabue is reported to have returned to Trcntham looking very well and not perceptibly lighter in condition following his successful Riccarton trip. Ho will go on to Hastings to fulfill his engagement in tho Hastings Stakes and tho Ormond Cup. Mangani, tho winner of this year’s Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie, is inbred to the Simon branch. His sire, Day Coinet, is by St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon), while his dam is a daughter of Maniapoto, who is by Soult (son of St. Simon). The injured knee which kept Ceremony from fulfilling his engagements at Awapuni and Ellerslio is now reported to bo quite all right and tho son of Absurd — Pennon is in easy work. He will not, however, race again this season. It is reported from Taranaki that Just John is being given a solid preparation on the beach and that he has been schooled. He should bo cherry ripe by the time tho winter meetings come round. His first start may be at Hawera. THE MASTERTON FIXTURE. The Masterton. fixture to-morrow will attract considerable local attention on account of a team of fair dimensions from this centre having made the trip across the range. With ISovar and Elicit to represent Local stables in the Highweight, Awapuni appears to hold quite a strong hand, although Airtight and Courageous may offer the pair strong opposition. The going should be to the liking of Novar. Contrary to tho general run, tho field m the Novice Stakes is comparatively small and the Foxton representative, Gambler, appears to hold an excellent prospect of breaking his maiden status. Glyn Du and Tane are local acceptors and the former might run prominently. While Ex Dono and Oral represent winning form in tho Juvenile Handicap, there are several other youngsters therein who might well be expected to run good races, Ben Hur and San Quex being ot the number. Great Lady is a local representative, but it may bo rather soon to expect the Bisogne filly as yet. Atholspear heads the scale of poundages in the Lawn Handicap, but tho Grey-spear gelding might find it difficult to givo away a stone and more to Red Fuchsiu. Billion, Royal Black and Desert Lad. Well drawn, tho last-named should rnco prominently, while a lower weight in Skyrider should hurry the field along. , Tresham, the topweight in the Masterton Cup, should not lack for friends, while the chances of The Swell, Mendip and Joy Bird cannot bo overlooked. Locarno is a likely local candidate for honours, while Atholspear and Spearmiss are two good hacks who might appreciate the drop in the weights. Perhaps Mendip (if started), Joy Bird and Spearmiss will furnish the favourite. , The Flying Handicap is of somewhat mixed class, the veteran , Tiega, who has not had a race for some time, being topweight with 8.3, Quantum, a winnor at Easter, being lib. below. Bonogno is well enough placed, while Veronese, Kilmezzo and Borsaleno appear to hold bright prospects and tho trio might well rank highest in the betting order. Despite his 9.6, Billion cannot be discarded should he prefer the Grandstand Handicap to the hack mile, while Full Mark has disappointed for some time past. Australis, Bissac and Shortly are a trio likely to bo in tho firing line in the run home and the public might select their fancy from Billion, Australis and Shortly. Brown Sugar, a' double winner at Waipukurau, is topweight in the Lansdowne Handicap with 9.0, Waterspear being 31bs. away. Roi do Val and Moutoa AYondcr appear to bo better placed lower down, but Silver Tray might furnish a surprise. AUSTRALIAN PURCHASES. J. Feilder, of Dunedin, the trainer of the Paper Money—Michaela filly Nedda, returned from Australia by the Maunganui on Tuesday. Ho also brought back with him a black gelding, half-brother to Triform by Tippler—Sweet Form by" Multi-form-Sweet Thom, by Medallion—Sweetbriar, by Goldsborough—The Thom (halfsister to- Cinnamon, the dam of Abercorn). The gelding was foaled in August, 1927, and entailed an outlay of 300gns. to effect his purchase. _ _ , The Wellington owner, Mr C. Boyle, brought back with him from Sydney on Tuesday a yearling colt by Saltash from Thaisa by Comedy King—Lady Lybia, by Antaeus from Lady Trenton by Trenton. Thaisa is a half-sister to Lord Nolan (St. Leger and Melbourne Cup winner), while Lady Lybia ia a half-sister to Lord Cadigan, winner of the Melbourne and Sydney Cups, etc. Foaled on Ootober 18, tho new importation cost 375gns. The southern owner, Mr G. D. Greenwood, purchased by proxy a yearling bay colt by Saltash from Aries by The Welkin — Armigera by. Hotchkiss —Armilla. Aries is a half-sister to Ingqla (C.J.C. Oaks and New Zealand St. Leger), dam of King Ingoda (Melbourne Cup) and Queen Ingoda, dam of Corinax. Armigera is half sister to Armlet and Armilla won the C.J.C. Oaks. Ihe colt has a bit of a knee, but should grow out of it. He cost 325gns. AVONDALE MEETING, i AUTUMN HANDICAP TO KING LU. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 10.
