CHRISTCHURCH RETAIN SAVILE CUP. THRILLING CONTEST YESTERDAY (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, April 10. There was thrilling and brilliant play in the polo tournament yesterday, when Christchurch met and defeated Hawke’s Bay in the final of the Savilb Cup by 10 goals to 7, thus retaining the coveted trophy. A feature of the play was tho display given by Gould, the winners’ captain, who gave a brilliant back exhibition. The teams were as follow:—> Chirstchurch.—G. Hutton, R. M. Johnson, G. Grigg and D. W. J. Gould. Hawke’s Bay.—J. Lyons, R. Mackenzie, N. M. Campbell and F. Mackenzie. Christchurch scored twice early in the first chukka, Johnson and Gould securing goals. Hawke’s Bay retaliated and Lyons at full gallop sent home a beautiful shot. —2 —-'l. Early in the second chukka Lyons goaled again to equalise the score. Gould, however, caught the Bay men out of position and scored the southerners’ third goal. They were not allowed to retain the lead long for almost immediately Campbell caught them napping and made the score three all, The Christchurch goal was in danger when Gould cleared for them to counter attack, Grigg goaling. In the succeeding chukka a penalty put Christchurch further ahead and then a spectacular attack by the holders saw Grigg score just on time.— 6—3. . , Hawke’s Bay made the pace in the fourth chukka, but Christchurch halted a dangerous movement and Grigg with a high shot made the score 7—3. Hawke’s Bay rallied and F. and R. Mackenzie each scored for them in the fifth chukka. A free hit in the next spell gave Gould an opportunity to centre for Johnson to score Christchurch’s eighth goal. The Bay retaliated and two strong onslaughts culminated in 11. Mackenzie and Lyons goaling to make the score only B—7 against them. In the final chukka Christchurch consolidated their position and Griggs scored. They did not let up and gave their opponents no quarter. Just before time Johnson goaled again for them, making the final score 10—7. kANDICAP CUP GAMES. After the Savile Cup final Feilding B (17) met Matangi B (21) in a Handicap Cup match. Matangi secured a narrow victory by 28 goals to 27. The tourney was continued this morning, when the Handicap Cup game, Wairarapa (10) v. Feilding (16) was played. In the first chukka Riddiford scored twice for Wairarapa, and in the second chukka Barton goaled. Hewitt added one in the third chukka. Collins scored in the fourth chukka, then N. J- Short scored for Feilding, making the score Feilding 17—15. McKelvie and N. Scott goaled for Feilding in the fifth chukka, which ended Feilding 19—15. The sixth chukka saw two goals added by Barton, and there was no further alteration. In the seventh Hewitt goaled for Wairarapa, and the game ended Feilding 19, Wairarapa 18.
