AUSTRALIAN FIRES.

OUTBREAK IN VARNISH WORKS. SYDNEY, April 9. A fire occurred at varnish works at Alexandria this evening and caused damage estimated at £20,000. Eighty firemen faced great danger fighting the flames, which swept through the building at a furious rate. The whole building burned fiercely owing to the inflammablo liquids stored. A portion of the building collapsed. A fire at Branxton, West Maitland, destroyed five buildings, including an hotel. The damage is estimated at £7OOO. SUSPICIOUS OUTBREAK. SYDNEY April 9. A box factory was burned at Rozolle. The damage is estimated at £3OOO. The origin of the fire is not known, but police inquiries are said to point to important developments. The . police are also inquiring into allegations that some men taking employment at mills affected by the timber workers’ dispute are interfering with machinery, assaulting other employees and causing fires.
