DECREASE IN ROLL

“SHACK” DISPENSED WITH. TERRACE END SCHOOL RELIEVED. Attention was drawn to the effect of the opening of the Russell Street School on the Terrace End School at the meeting of the committee of the latter institution last evening. In his report the headmaster, Mr A. W. Thompson, stated: —“The roll number is now 671. Mainly owing to the opening of the Russell Street School, 97 pupils have left, hut 10 new pupils have been admitted. Owing to the sudden fall in the roll, Mr H. V. Mountford has been transferred to Russell Street. Acting on instructions. from the Education Board, I have discontinued the use of the ‘shack.’ This building is about to be v srrtaniMed.” The chairman, Mr.W.'B. Cameron, commented that after much condemnation on the part of the ‘ committee the ‘-shack’-’ was-to- be'dispensed with and the roll number reduced to somewhere near the correct figure. He had interviewed the board’s architect who had suggested that the shack he removed. He had agreed to this on being informed that -in its stead the board would erect a tool-shed and a shelter-shed if application was made. The headmaster added that while applying for the facilities mentioned application should be made for a staff bicycle shed and additional pegs for the children to hang their hats and coats on.
